Hi all. I own a 2013 ram 1500 with the 4.7. I just replaced the engine after extreme neglect killed the past engine at 166K.

I have 250mi on the rebuilt 4.7. I want to know what would be good maintenance schedules to follow. I don’t run the recommended 5W-20, i run 5w-30 in it. Right now for break in it’s running conventional 10w30.

I’m going to follow 4k intervals, as i think most of us know how weak the oiling system is on the 4.7. I’m just unsure which oil i should use for maximum film strength and maximum protection of the engine. I am thinking PUP 5W-30 with Motorkote friction remover after i hit 1k on the rebuild. Thoughts?

How is your RAM used?
Which ever oil you do end up using, I don't believe that you'll need any oil additive such as Motorkote or any other brand.
I believe that any 5W30 full synthetic(or even a 0W30) will server you well and you may want to try different brands at each oil change to see if there are any benefits from one to another. Meaning, smoother/quieter operation, better fuel economy etc.

Don't spend too much money; 4k miles intervals are fairly short and so a lot of unused potential is going down the drain so to speak.
If you want to know what works well for your application, get some UOAs and check the vis retention after those 4k mile intervals.
Any brand of oil with a decent HTHS value, 5w-30 for year-round use.

Any 0/5w-40 would be my choice. It's what I run in my newer gm 6.2 that's still under warranty.

I have the 4.7 in my 2003 Durango. I am not sure how much of the engine is the same between yours and mine. I run 10w30 Castrol Synthetic blend and I also add a can of Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter additive with each oil change as the Dodge and Chrysler engines seem to affected by lifter issues if oil is not changed regularly. My OCIs are always around 5k.

Bottom end is completely the same for the most part. Everything up is different. Thank you for your input, it is very valuable!

5w-30, 10w30, 0w-40, 5w-40 are all great choices. Use whatever is on sale an change more frequently.

Being that engine is prone to sludge, and when I had a 3.7L v6 which is identical minus 2 cylinders, it blackened the oil in 1k.

4k ideal, maybe 5k absolute max. No extended drains on these ones.

Your post about the broken piston skirt has me researching into these engine as I am able to get very high mile beater trucks at auction for 1500 ~ 2500 bucks, however I am not comfortable owning one with high miles. Head gaskets, timing chains, and lifters are common. Broken piston skirts not so much.
