2012 Nissan Versa ($10,900): The new Toyota Echo.

Okay, so the all-new VERSA is ugly (not quite Toyota Echo *UGLY* but still ugly) but priced at only 10,900, you get air conditioning and a radio. For basic A to B, do we really need more?

Seems like a better buy than to buy an overpriced used late-model Japanese car that can cost 9K to 11K. My 2007 Toyota Corolla, for example, has a "True Market Value" of $9,500. It's almost 5 year old car!

If money is tight, this car makes a good case for itself: you're getting a brand-new stick-shift car with a brand-new warranty and the knowledge that no one has abused it. It'll likely last forever.

Ive got an 09 versa, been overall very happy with it. Ive got a few gripes, but im had gripes about my new hondas and toyotas in the past. Bang for my buck is huge with the versa. I checked out the new versa at the NYC auto show a few months ago, its larger inside, has a more efficient engine, but the interior was a bit ugly and the exterior isnt as good as the older generation. For 11k, it sure is value for money!

Does this have a CVT? Avaible in a maunal (for less?)

Can't beat the price and my neighbors 5 speed Sentra should be junk 10 times over. If its lucky I change the oil in it twice a year and it sees 30k per year. I'd bet it has well over 350k. Leaks less than my Daughters Contour with only 110k.

Yes, thanks for adding that the interior is huge. This car offers much utility and practicality. Definitely a better buy than a Used-Car.

I'd only be interested in the manual. A vehicle that I want to drive for a long time would have to have one both in ease of maintenance and cost.

Nissan is making a brilliant move here. They are going right for the jugular of Hyundai, and their control of the ultra-low cost vehicle market.

When the next economic slowdown hits, or even if it doesn't, with gas prices rising, this car will sell like hotcakes - the streets up here are LITTERED with the current version of this car, where gas is steadily over $5/gallon.

Call me old-fashioned, but I really like it - glance at it quickly, and it has the same profile as a 1970's compact car, with the sligtly longer over hang at the back.

They no longer produce Toyota Echos, the Yaris replaces the Echo.

Meh. I'd spend more for a more reliable car. The folks I know with Nissans are always complaining about something, most often electrical gremlins.

When we were looking at the Corolla almost bought a Saturn Ion. The center console killed that deal.

Myself and my family have been treated fantastically by Nissans.
My folks '00 Maxima has been the best car they ever owned, and would still hop in it and go anywhere. GREAT car. My 02 Maxim and 02 Altima were also both good and never let me down.

Exactly what I was thinking! I got mine since a 3 year old corolla was the same price as mine new. This is my first nissan though, so lets see how it goes in the long term.

As a side note, my neighbor has a 2006 sentra, 70K miles, hes done 1 oil change with dino and no-name filter in the last 30K/4 years. I helped him do that change, came out like mud. Other than that, he does absolutely no maintenance, other than gas it to 90mph on the freeway to "clear the system out" and he does this very very frequently- whatever that does! His car still runs, so im impressed for sure.

A friend of mine is on her 3rd CVT with her 2008 Versa. Now granted she has quite a few miles on hers (over 200K miles I think) but still the 3rd transmission and this one is starting giving issues too?!??! She is out of warranty and Nissan is really the only mechanic for these and it is going to be $$ to fix again... more than the car is worth by far....If they haven't improved the CVT design since then I would run away from the CVT.


I would go Hyundai in a heartbeat over Nissan. Better looks, better mpgs, better power, better interior, better...

Are you serious? I love the center console. You can see all the gages and the steering wheel blocks nothing. I mean yeah, it took a day or two to get used to it, but that was all. I was thinking all cars should have that arrangement.

Yeah, the new Yaris still has that silly center instrument cluster. I can't stand it either.
