Hello everyone, I have a couple questions. this is my first sports car in a while. I have a 2011 Mustang GT 5.0 L roush super charger is being installed as we speak (I get it back next week )6 spd 3.73 rear end the car has 5000Km. I live in Red deer Alberta Canada
My questions are : What Oil and filter would be best suited for this engine now that It is super Charged ( it will have around 540 hp ) I may on ocation run around 6500 RPM as well take it to the local 1/4 mile drag strip as well drive it on the street but will never be driven in the winter.
As well what oil would be recommend for the transmission and rear diff.

thanks in advance SDF

Good luck on getting it to hook on the 3.73 with that low 1st gear. The fastest pass on a showroom stock car was a 3.31 geared car last I heard.

Given that the car is now modified I think we can forgo the 5W20 recommendation. My car runs 0W-40 Mobil 1 for open track although I have been thinking of switching to Redline 5W30 (Similar HTHS numbers which is what really matters) although that might be spendy in Canada. You might consider retrofitting the Boss Oil Cooler. That said Im currently running 0W-20 Toyota on the street.

I run the Motorcraft FL500S filter on street and track.

Hey Gene thanks for the quick reply. I will talk with my parts guy about the boss oil cooler in the am. I am not to worried about the oil if its a little pricey I just want to use the best product. This my first s/ced car so I want to do it right.

Thanks SDF

I agree with GeneK's recommendation on the Mobil 1 0w40, Redline 5w30 or Amsoil ASL 5w30. The Mobil 1 is easily had and is great stuff. For the gear oils Amsoil or Redline no question in that ride.

Thanks chubbs1 I have never seen Amsoil in Alberta Canada but will look a little harder for it. we have Mobil 1 0w40 here what is the hths numbers for it ?

I forgot to mention the trans is a little picky about the fluid. It was only available as the German Made (Fuchs) Ford MTF XT-M5-QS (meets spec WSD-M2C200-C) fluid like the Focus MTX75 Trans used.

Now that the Dual Clutch Automatics are available a US Sourced version is available as Ford DCT XT-11-QDC (meets spec WSD-M2C200-D).

The main thing is make sure whichever fluid you get meets Ford WSD-M2C200-C (Requires Group IV Base?) or WSD-M2C200-D (Allows Group III Base?).

Ive seen some speculations the original fluid may have been Group IV PAO based and the newer stuff is Group III but have not seen confirmation.

Im currently running all Ford Fluids (other than engine oil) as I feel the 75W140 Synthetic Rear Axle Lube and Ford Synthetic MTF are about as good as anything else available and the Ford Brake Fluid is pretty good as well.

Unless you track the thing, a 40 grade isn't really necessary. The drag strip won't elevate your oil temps any. A solid 30 grade would be well more than adequate.

If you really want to get tricky with it, I'd give the mix of half and half Mobil 1 0w50 Racing and Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy 0w20 a try. It popped up on the forum recently. It had pretty good numbers to it, and I think it'd be worth a shot for your application.

With the amount of money you're putting into this, it'd be fun to do a few used oil analysis to see what works well with your setup. I hope you plan on having an oil pressure gauge in the car as well. Keep us posted!

Edit: found the thread. very intriguing. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2334500

Redline been in mustang word for a while now, I choose redline for racing/abuse/redline/daily drive

THIS IS JUST MY OPINION , amsoil is just for daily drive and grocery getting and " put in and forget about it for life type of fluid "

btw many high horse power mustang running mobil 1 , check stangnet.com many are running mobil 1

I craw under my friend dad zo6 800whp ( stamp on the hood ), oil is mobil 1 5w30 with mobil 1 oil filter

HTHS for Mobil 1 0w40 = 3.8cP
Same as RedLine 5w30.

Amsoil makes oil for racing applications as well.I know plenty of people running it @ our local 1/4 track.

This is not the first time I am hearing this about the Motorcraft 75W-140 gear lube!

The other time was from someone who road races their f body, and he seems to think that this stuff is actually better than all of the 'boutique' gear oils as well (it is actually costlier from the dealer than all of the boutique stuff save for some of the Motul products

)!!

This makes me want to add it to my list of "to try" gear oils (I already agree/say that the Motorcraft/Ford Racing XL-3 LS additive is the absolute best out there).

I have over 600HP at the crank on my Shelby GT 500 with the JLT CAI and SCT tune. Mine also has the 3.31 gear and it will smoke the rears (285s) like there is no tomorrow. Have fun but watch out when that supercharger kicks in!!!!!

Mobil 1 0w40. It is made for applications like this (high powered, forced induction: see Porsche and Mercedes approvals).

I agree. With the extra power you could increase the viscosity, say 0.3cP interms of HTHSV but the hugh jump to a 3.8cP 40wt oil is OTT unless you will be seeing very high oil temp's.
I like GeneK's use of the Toyota 0W-20 but add 35% Mobil 1 SM 0W-40 which will give you a light 0W-30.
Or any premium 5w30 like Mobil 1 5w30 or Pennzoil Platnium 5w30.

I cant say how much the supercharger will raise oil temps. Generally at the drag strip my oil temps in a stock car are a good bit lower than the street (but then I dont hot lap). That said without an oil cooler I have seen 280F+ oil temps when on the road course and it was still climbing...I intend to install an oil cooler before the next time.

I've read that high HP at low RPMs when using a roots type blower ends to shear oils, I use Mobil 1 0W-40 in my Marauder...

Hot it idles two pounds more oil pressure vs 5W-20 and has approx five pounds more above 3K RPMs, never saw any real difference in cold pressure...

I second the notion of Mobil 1 0w40 if you want to keep things simple and affordable.

Otherwise Redline 5w30 would be a nice choice.

I always recommend installing a fully functional oil pressure gauge in any modified engine if the car is not already so equipped.
Becoming familiar with the OP characteristics of your engine is a prerequisite to making an informed engine oil choice as far as an oil's viscosity is concerned.
In particular one should know under what conditions the oil pump go into by-pass mode. Even with the spec' 20wt oil, this will be most of the time at higher rev's until the oil temp's have climbed sufficiently.
As a freind of mine discovered when he installed a S/C on his NSX, oil temp's did not increase that much even during fast steet use. The reason, and this applies to most high performance cars, is that you can't keep the engine on the boil for long enough to start increasing the bulk oil temp's and the second you back off the oil quickly returns to normal.

Running a heavier oil lowers the oil temp's when the oil pump will go into by-pass mode and running an oil two grades heavier than spec' may mean you can never use maximum rev's without going into by-pass. If that's the case, using the heavier oil has become counter-productive.
It is an too common newbie mistake to assume a more powerful engine automatically requires a heavier oil.

My advise is to stick with the spec' oil your running now and establish first for yourself whether you need something heavier for the way you use your car. And be assured that even with the S/C installed, driven normally, even with occational WOT bursts, the spec' oil is perfectly fine.

Agreed. Ford doesn't even always specify a thicker oil just because an engine is supercharged. My 1999.5 Lightning specified the same 5w30 as every other F-150 engine of the time. On the other hand, the GT500 calls for 5w-50.

Nonetheless, CATERHAM is quite right that you cannot know unless you have the gauges to provide you with the information. Otherwise, it's just a guess.
