I am on a trip to PA, and jumped in a 2011 Avenger at the rental car center to see just how much it was improved over the previous year.

I have to say, Chrysler did an excellent job with a mid cycle refresh on this car. The '08-'10 were so noisy and filled with cheap plastic on the interior, I wouldn't even take one as a rental. Well, all has changed with the 2011 model year.

The interior is much improved. Better quality plastics, soft touch surfaces, LED lighting for the overhead lighting and better sound insulation. The 2010 sounded like the engine was sitting in your lap, not so with the 2011!

The ride is nice, quiet and power from the 2.4 is very good, and downshifts even with the 6 speed are rarely necessary. I picked this up in the middle of a snowstorm, the interstate was snow covered and the Avenger handled very well.

Nice touches include a very good sounding touchscreen radio with hard drive, auto climate control and Sirius were much appreciated.

On the downside, torque management is very obvious. Even during light acceleration, you really feel the gas being cut to the engine...I have never experienced this before. It is almost like driving a manual. I kinda like the sensation, but I can see how some would find this annoying. Also, Chrysler needs to ditch the monster key with the remote built into the head. Give me a seperate key fob remote, or a switchblade key.

This is finally a class competitive vehicle. Not best in class, but it is fun and comfortable to drive, and I would consder buying one if the price were right.

Are the seats any better? Last time I looked at one the seats were bolstered in an obnoxious way. I hated them, though the rest of th e interior didn't bother me that much, but that's probably because at the time I was driving a cavalier and even the chryco products of the last few years made that look like a friggin mercedes benz.

I didn't get the noise problem from the similar '09 Sebring. It was quiet and fairly smooth for a large-ish 4cyl.

But man oh man was it slow.

Glad to see they sorted that out.

But the big story is the V6.

The Mazda6S used to rule by the smallest of margins. 272 hp vs the Accord's 271, Altima's 270, Camry's 268, and Malibu's 252.
Now the Chryslers show up with 283.

Good to know. I had an older one as a rental a few years ago and it was one of the most God-awful vehicles I'd ever driven.

the big 3 are catching up and in some cases are at least equal to the asians now

The (formerly) class leading Mazda6S engine is Big3 engine. You might have seen it in the Mustang also.

I would go as far as to venture that on a dollar for dollar basis, The Big 3 are as good as anyone's cars.

Nick R - The seats are comfortable in this one, and the headrest even tilts back and forth which is really nice.

And I was wrong, I started it this morning and noticed dual exhaust, I was shocked when I popped the hood and saw the 3.6! I wasn't really getting on the pedal hard considering the weather, but since it was a little nicer out today I did. It's quick, but if you drive with a light foot you wouldn't know it.

OOh the new Pentastar? What do you think of it? How smooth is it? Power delivery? Torque? All that other fun stuff. MOAR info now.

I have to say that the V6 in my Terrain is much quieter, but the Pentastar has a bit of a throaty sound to it at idle. It is rather smooth, except the torque management really keeps the shifts from being smooth. Power delivery is very tame if you keep a light foot on the accelerator, but really comes on if you get on the gas.

Considering the weather and all the city driving I was doing, it was tough to really get a good feel for the 3.6. Overall I did really like the car though - something I never thought I would say about an Avenger!

Did you notice what grade oil they spec on the fill cap? I'm liking what I've read about those Pentastar engines. IIRC they aren't DI yet [?] which to me is a plus.

Probably 5W-20, as with nearly all Chryco vehicles these days.

That's correct, they didn't go with DI yet, chrysler stated their goal with this V6 was to reduce NVH to minimal levels, and they said that DI can induce additional NVH that standard Port Injection does not.

I'm fairly sure they are specing 5W30 in that application. I thought maybe Dishdude being a true Bitoger had a look at the fill cap. I also read that they had plans for making it DI. I'm hoping they offer the Pentastar in the 2013 Liberty, which is when I'll be in the market for something new again. I'm also hoping they don't change it to DI, or if they do the bugs are worked out by then. A lot of hoping!

Nice. glad to know they are making their comeback.
I was sorta getting really sad at the state of Chrysler over the last few years.
It all started with the axe of the Neon (SX2.0 in Canada) It was a totally underrated excellent reliable car.

The '11 Avenger sounds very promising based on initial reviews. I think they should have almost changed the name -- like Chrysler did (Sebring = 200). The 08-10 Avengers did not make a good name for themselves. The new Pentastar has been tested 0-60 in 6.3 secs in the Avenger. That's really competitive in that class.
