same truck i had posted about a few times before, my buddies 2011 1500 chevy with the 4.8 vortec, which now has 66k miles. I noticed in the owners manual that it says to use dexos, but also says if dexos isnt available to use an API approved oil. Last oil change, which I did at 64,800, i used Valvoline maxlife 5W30 and a Fram ultra. I change the oil every 5k, so i realized using synthetic is a waste. So would Maxlife or Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 and a wix or TG filter be more suited for 5k ocis? My buddy drives the truck VERY easy.

Flip a coin. They will both be more than fine in that application. If you want to say a few bucks...grab whichever one is cheaper. But seeing how there shouldn't be much of a price difference...use whatever makes you or him feel warm and fuzzy inside!

Oh and completely off topic...but how the 650 HP build coming along? I got my 12V up around the 1,000 HP mark before I detuned it. Should be about 650-700 HP now.

I'm using the dexos1 approved Pennzoil Semi-Synthetic in two 5.3 liter GM trucks.

I get it at W*M, the 5 quart jug is less than $2 more than the 5 quart Pennzoil yellow jug, I change it according to the OLM... and not worry a bit.

The dexos1 approved oils should be good for 5000 miles.

What kind of mods did you do to get to 1000hp?
any dyno slips? 1/4 mile runs?

Benched 180 pump, 5K GSK, Hamilton Head, 64/74/14 over an S480 (externally gated), water/meth, 5x24 SAC injectors, Hamilton 188/220 cam, balanced rotating assembly, billet transmission (many manufacturer's parts)...that's a good basis on what was going on. I have the dyno sheets back at home somewhere or another. I'll have to post them up when I find them.

Wait, don't you have an OLM?

Also, Maxlife does meet dexos standards now.

Watch out for Napa's sales. A few times a year, Napa Synthetic goes on sale for $3.49/qt. It is rebraded Synpower, and it meets dexos standards. Synthetic isn't a waste when it doesn't cost more than dino!

Another option is Pennzoil Dexos Blend, if there is a Walmart nearby. It only costs $1 or so more than Pennzoil conventional for the 5qt bottle.

Just use something that meets dexos standards with the OLM-suggested OCI's until 100k or 2016. While the truck is under warranty, just do what they say.
