Car pretty much red lined since 4 miles on it 9400 miles when I changed it. Factory VW oil

Minimal viscosity loss, if any, as well as minimal fuel dilution.

Wear metals are high due to factory fill. There's no reason to be concerned nor is there any reason to reduce the length of the next interval.

I found that interesting also! It is odd considering that a lot of other car makers like to use extremely high amounts of moly in the initial fill (whether that's simply a special break in additive they have added to the oil or in the actual oil itself, who knows?)

I'd say for almost 10k miles of hard driving on the first fill, oil did GREAT!

Who cares about the additive levels - you've still got TBN on the table at 10k - could have gone 12k!

How can you say that without knowing the TAN?

Why not? He's following the recommendations of his owner's manual.

VW says change it at 10k. Ive read 100 different things on when to change the oil so I changed it as close as 10k as I could and then shipped it to Blackstone to see whats up. I refilled with Mobil 1 ESP I am not using any BP products(Castrol).

There's nothing in this sample to indicate an issue. How was your FF oil at 1K miles?

And he drove 9400 miles with elevated levels of iron and copper in his oil. That could have been prevented.

Even had he chose to 'prevent' that there is no guarantee that his engine would be any better off than it is now.

Normal report with normal numbers. Just use a nice grade of oil and a premium filter and go on.

Folks, there is a cause and effect relationship that needs to be addressed. The wear metals you see are the effect or result of wear, they are not causing more wear.

You're assuming this is something that in fact needs to be prevented, but does it? Is there proof that these levels of iron and copper are doing harm? As BobFout mentioned, they are just a byproduct of engine break-in, but not cause for concern on a new engine.

IMO, if this situation was harmful to the long-term well being of the engine, the manufacturer would have mandated an early oil change.

At least as of 2008, VW did recommend a change at 5K. It would be interesting to know if the change to 10K coincided with their free maintenance program.

It certainly wouldn't have hurt to change it at 5K. It is hard to know if it would have really helped anything.

Is ESP the right choice for the fresh oil? I thought it was not?
