My 2008 Silverado got totaled last month and as hard as it was to resist buying another one, I made a huge leap into the economical segment by picking up a Civic. So far, I'm absolutely thrilled with it! I did a search on hear and found a few older Civic threads, but thought I'd start a new one and get some oil recommendations.

The car calls for 5w20 and I will run that spec. Would just like to know what other Honda owners are running and if they follow the maintenance minded or have a specific oci? It's my first Honda and welcome any and all suggestions, even beyond the scope of oil and filter. TIA!

I recently bought an 07 Civic and I plan on just using conventional oil from the dealership and following the OLM, since my car was preowned they will do the changes for half price as long as I own the car. Once the warranty is up I plan on using Castrol GTX or Mobil 1 and just running the OLM out twice.

1. Dont change the initial fill early. Their is liquid assembly lube that contains among other things a lot of moly in the oil (Honda calls it break-in oil) that they insist be run to term.

2. Follow the OLM. Its well proven.

3. Motorcraft 5W20 Synthetic Blend is well proven and seems to be one of the best "bang for the buck" purchases you can make. Its $12 per 5 Qt Jug at WalMart. The new GF5 version is supposed to be even better.

nothing more than conventional is necessary for your civic

imo the top 3 conventional are

pennzoil
valvoline
quakerstate

if you must use synthetic
synpower and platinum are a favorite on here.

if you use conventional i would go with 4-5k oci and follow the olm if you use synthetic.

+1.

Can't really do better than that! Pennzoil 5w-20 is also excellent. Nice thing about the 5w-20 oils is there really is not a bad one out there.

Enjoy the Civic! Good choice.

I would use the OEM Honda or Toyota 0w-20 oils. They are a VERY different blend than other oils on the market, probably for a good reason.

least expensive 5w20 you can find, they are all excellent.

My 2007 Civic EX has been trouble free and I can squeeze 40+ MPG on the highway.

Manny Ramirez in a Civic? I don't think so. I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance mainly because it flows well in single digit temps.

I don't know how much different the engine in your 2010 is than the one in a 2002. In my mother-in-law's 2002 EX I've run Mobile, Valvoline, Castrol, and Quaker State conventionals with Fram, Purolator, and Bosch filters. Average OCI has been 4,000 - 4,500 miles and the engine seems to like any of those equally.

The current fill is a "home brew" of left over Pennzoil Platinum, Valvoline SynPower, and a couple quarts of store brand oil with a DENSO filter. The next fill will be some Service Pro synthetic blend that I picked up for $1.50 quart at a local hardware store, probably with one of the PureONE filters I have sitting on the shelf.

I don't think you can really go wrong with any choice. It's all about what you want to do, what your own preferences are, how much you want to spend, and how OCD you are about what goes in.

Ford and Honda essentially invented the 5W20 Grade. Ford's required spec was even tougher than Honda.

Most any name brand 5W20 meets the Ford Spec and all are pretty good. MC is just a very good lubricant for the price point manufactured by Conoco-Phillips. Their is a large body of knowledge with running this lubricant in Hondas with excellent UOA going by the Honda OLM. Their are other choices that would work as well but given price, body of knowledge with the combo and proven results its hard to argue against.

The Mobil supplied Honda High-Moly 0W20 Synthetic Hybrid Oil is excellent but the fractional gain in fuel mileage is going to cost 3-4 times the cost of MC and you cant extend the drains while under warranty.

Hey everyone.

I'm picking up a 2010 Honda Civic EX-L automatic in August or early September (it's being built in August), and I came upon this thread.

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, so our seasons can range in temperature from a low of -20 C in the winter, all the way up to +35 C in the summer.

It looks like the general consensus on here is that Pennzoil Platinum and now the new Ultra is the way to go, yes?

Now, I was looking on Pennzoil.ca, and it doesn't appear that they list the Ultra line, yet. I assume then that I won't be able to purchase Ultra here.

My other question is that, since synthetic allows you to go longer distances between oil changes, won't this cause problems for me when it comes to the warranty?

Thanks!

This is great 411 - much appreciated! And thanks to all the other suggestions!

in my '03 Civic EX I'm running Redling 0w-20 on one year intervals which are around 7,500 to 8,500 miles. I ran their 5w-20 last year and in the years before that it was Mobil 1 5w-20. All have been with the Mobil 1 110 filter.

I don't see any consumption difference between them which means I use next to nothing over the year. The mileage is better with the Red Line 0w-20 by a tick.

This is in SoCal weather with hot weather trips to Palm Springs and Tucson.

The Platinum would be a very good oil for your upcoming new Civic. Petro Canada also makes some excellent oils that would work very well for you. You might want to look in to their synthetic line of oils. Not sure what maintenance requirements are in Canada for Honda cars, but if your running off of an OLM system the oil changes will be somewhere between 7-10,000 miles.

I just swapped to Pennzoil Ultra 5w20 in our 2008 Fit Sport. It is literally night and day difference between OEM Honda and the PU. The car is quieter, it revs better and it gets better mileage (we have seen 4 more mpg on two fill ups, driving the exact same route so far). I know Hondas (especially the Fit engine) are easy on oil but the car really seems to like the PU.

Thanks for the info!

I assume OLM means oil life monitoring?

Having driven Civics for some time now, including '96EX, '04EX, '06EX & '10EX (all autos) and having put in excess of 100k on each and NEVER had an engine issue with any, I have followed the mfgr reccomendation for oil weight. Starting with the '04 have used Mobil 1 5W-20 & Mobil 1 110 filters. Havn't really trusted the OLM setup so I just change every 5k. I buy my oil/filters when Advance/Pep Boys or Autozone run the 29.95 special (5qts & Filter) and always have 2-3 changes ahead (stash) With all my Hondas (including my wife's Accords) I have followed the same formula, I have a trusted mechanic at a local Honda dealer who I have used for 25+ years, so I go there for most of my service...BTW, I have never had a dealer object to my supplying the oil & filter, I'm just uncomfortable with bulk oil as you can never be sure what you are getting. While I have excellent results with the Mobil 1 over the years (I have NEVER needed to add any oil between changes)I would use the Motorcraft Semi-Syn 5W-20 without reservation, most likely with a WIX filter. My company vehicles (all Fords) have had dealer service every 5K with the motorcraft oil for many years and had NO engine issues whatsoever (including a POS Aerostar that went 160K before they traded it) I just prefer synthetics and am willing to pay a bit more, it's peace-of-mind for me. Have considered the PP, but the Mobil 1 has worked so well, I'm hesitant to change. Mobil 1, Motorcraft or PP...even the Mobil 5000 all will work well, just use a good filter. Gene K is right on about the Motorcraft, works well in the Honda and is a good value.
