2010 Honda Civic Oil?

I live in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, so our seasons can range in temperature from a low of -20 C in the winter, all the way up to +35 C in the summer.

It looks like the general consensus on here is that Pennzoil Platinum and now the new Ultra is the way to go, yes?

Now, I was looking on Pennzoil.ca, and it doesn't appear that they list the Ultra line, yet. I assume then that I won't be able to purchase Ultra here.

My other question is that, since synthetic allows you to go longer distances between oil changes, won't this cause problems for me when it comes to the warranty?

Thanks!

Being in Canada, i would use Petro-Canada oils - they make a 0W-20 synthetic that will cover everything our climate can throw at it!

As for the warranty, just stay within the required mileage limit for an OCI - for a Honda, it is likely 16,000km (10k miles), so that is already basically an exteneded interval.

Ultra is 'supposed' to be here in October, as a SN/GF-5 offering.

Oh okay, I never even considered Petro-Canada oils before, thanks!

So, since the Civic has an oil life meter in it, I assume it will detect that an oil change is required later than normal with the synthetic in it?

From Honda.ca
Quote:

2010 Civic Sedan Maintenance Schedule

Your vehicle is equipped with the Maintenance Minder system. The on-board computers will calculate when service is required.

One of the most convenient and important features on your Civic Sedan is the advanced technology of the Maintenance Minder System. The maintenance requirements for your Civic Sedan are determined by an internal algorithm, which considers the engine starting temperature, driving distance and engine RPM. The onboard computer also judges your driving conditions and habits, and then calculates the remaining engine oil life, displaying it as a percentage. The technology of the Maintenance Minder System allows you to enjoy your Civic Sedan without the worry of when you are due for your next servicing.

The remaining engine oil life and maintenance service symbols are displayed in either the odometer/trip meter area or in the multi-information display area. As part of the Maintenance Minder System, a separate "wrench" icon also appears indicating that required maintenance service is due. Based on engine operating conditions, the onboard computer in your Civic Sedan calculates the remaining engine oil life. When the remaining oil life is approximately 15%, the Maintenance Minder will indicate that an oil change is due soon. When it reaches 5%, the system will show that an oil change is due now. When it reaches 0%, the system will show that an oil change is past due by an indicated mileage. Along with these reminders, the system will also display either a Maintenance Main Item A or B along with Maintenance Sub-Items 1 through 6 as required.

The only thing I worry about is that, since the Maintenance Minder System tells you when certain service intervals are required based on oil life, if the oil life is extended by running synthetic, then these service intervals will be extended as well, no?

Oh, what is SN/GF-5 oil?

Thanks!

No. The OLM/MM senses driving conditions, temperature, engine speed, etc. but does not detect, sense, or evaluate the oil at all.

I have an '09 Civic EX, and have run Pennzoil 5W-20 and 5w30 changed every 5000 miles. When running the 5W-20 I noticed the car idled coarser and when we took it to the in-laws house in PA one winter, it made a really coarse sound upon startup several times. I've abandoned the 5W-20 and am now using 5w30, and the idle is smoother and the car just seems to run better. The only plus I've found to 5W-20 is you can actually get 1-2mpg better with it. If I recall, the euro spec Civics all require 5w30, and the only reason Honda uses the 5W-20 in the US is to increase fuel mileage. I wouldn't have believed that either, except my wife watches her Acura's mpg like a hawk, and every time when we took her car to the dealer for the 15,000 mile and 30,000 mile service, she immediately noticed the mileage increased 2mpg and the car idled coarser. The dealer was incorrectly using 5W-20 in the Acura, as it calls for 5w30. As soon as I changed her oil back to 5w30, she noticed the mileage drop again, but the car ran much smoother and quieter.
