I went to check my oil level a few days ago (I am now at 2800 miles), and it was definitely .5 to 3/4 quarts overfilled. I got the car custom ordered and it had 6 miles on it when I got it. I just figured the factory fill would be fine and I would change the oil at 3k.

I was reading around about bubbles on the dipstick, so right when I turned the car off I checked it. There were 3 little bubbles on it, but I don't know if that many is normal right after shut off or not. I figured if it was covered by a lot of small bubbles it would be bad.

I took it to the dealer to drain some off, they said they won't touch the factory fill and if it's overfilled then it should be.

What do you guys think.

Hmmm...I think it would be ok. I purposely overfill my 3.1L by 1/2 qrt so that I don't have to worry about topping off between my 4 month oci's. I do check it, but by overfilling just a little, I never have to add any.

I think overfill is a negative, better under than over. They have a "safe" range right there on the stick. Do you check it hot or cold?

I don't know guys...every mechanic and MANY on this forum have stated numerous times that a half qt over will hurt nothing.

I'd check it hot, 3 minutes after shutdown (or however much time is listed in the owner's manual) and see if it's still showing over-filled.

This is assuming the manuals still say to check the oil when hot in the newer models.

Trust me I have waited 5 min after shutoff, immediately after shutoff, and when it is completely cold. All of them are overfilled. I am just wondering if a few bubbles (2-3) immediately after shutoff is bad or not.

Planning on changing my oil Wednesday either way.

masterkaj,

Those bubbles you see are due to the oil being whipped/adjated inside the oil pan instead of being pumped into the engine itself.

That's why overfilling past the dipstick indicator isn't recommended! OK slightly past is fine but too much will cause those bubbles.

If I were you I'd drain that half quart of oil out and recheck after a good drive on the freeway. I'll bet that why you see bubbles.

i do not know what is the correct procedure of checking oil in ur car but since its European , the way I check oil level in my BMW should work for u also.

1. Warm the car up (short quick drive at least)
2. Idle the car for a 1 Min
3. Wait one Min
4. Check Oil Level

That's what I'm worried about. But why would the factory overfill it. I literally was waiting for my car at the dealer, so it's not like they had time to add more oil.

I also have already driven it 2800 miles :/.

Alot of new VW don't take kindly to overfilling. My buddy works at a VW dealer and overfilled cars are coming in left and right with failed converters from it. If you at 2800 on factory fill, if it was me I would dump it. There is a sticker underhood on the radiator support stating do no overfill.

masterkaj,

I'm guessing the dealership filled up you GTI using a hose that connected to a oil sump located at the ceiling. My fair guess is that it was over-filled by the mechanic mis-dialed the amount.

I use and have my dealership do my services too prescribed by the manual. However I don't trust them on everything. I've found dealerships forgetting to put fresh oil in the crankcase and giving it back to me, short changing my engine on the proper amount of oil, forgetting to rotate my tires etc. The list goes on.

All I'm saying is don't trust them on everything!!!! What little we all can do after a cars service is check the oil. Even a cave man can do it! mechanics make mistakes too although their human too.

Thing is the dealer had nothing to do with this, it is still the factory fill.

I just don't want any long term issues like damage to the crankcase and seals, damage to the cat, and extra oil vapors gunking up the intake valves.

Why not just change the oil. FF has extra garbage in it from it being the first oil in the new engine..

Just change it out for fresh not overfilled oil.

Drain and fill using the capacity stated in the manual.

Plan on it. Just wish I checked it earlier so I could drain some.

So any bubbles on the dipstick is bad? Only a few right after engine shutoff. I'll try and drain some before my oil gets here. Got some Motul 8100 xcess on the way.

Pump some oil out through the dip stick tube. I do it with a very small diameter clear hose and attach the other end of the hose to a pump. You can get the clear hose at Home Depot/Lowes and the pump you can get at an auto parts store.

Was thinking of picking up a mityvac anyways. No bubbles on the dipstick when I got home tonight. Still want to drain some though.

I agree with all who said don't stress too much. But removing some of the oil is justified since Cats cost plenty and getting one on such NEW car would be a pain and senseless. But I would caution against draining all the factory brew so early. The verdict is still out about whether VW has special additives in the factory oil intended to last until proper break-in is accomplished. Are u following the break-in procedures from the owners manual? Just a word of caution no intended as a jab

BTW i have a new GTI and have owned several VW's

First thing I did when I bought my Jeep was pop the hood and check the oil before I drove it off the lot. You'd think the oil would be at the proper level, many times it is not, mine was. Working for dealers I've seen many that were over and under filled.

You've driven 2800 miles, I doubt you harmed anything, and even if you did it would probably be years before any problems would surface. Proving to a dealer that them delivering you a car that was overfilled by +/- half a qt did any harm would be like holding a winning lottery ticket and getting struck by a bolt of lightening at the same time. Good luck. Get the oil to the proper level drive the car and forget it.

As a side note I've driven my car that calls for 4.5 qts with 5 qts for many years, no problems!

Welcome to BITOG!!!!!!! Good luck with your new ride! Enjoy it!!!!!!!!

Dump the factory fill, drain the filter and pour in new. I am a big fan of dumping the factory fill early to get out most of the break in metals.

I have the 2.0TSI in my Passat and I dumped the factory fill at 1,000 miles and poured in GC. I will run it for 4k miles and at the 5,000 odometer mark, I will replace oil and filter. Then at the 10k mark the stealer will get to do a free oil change.

But, I am sticking with a 5k OCI in this direct injected engine. I think 10k is absurd in these engines that are widely know to shread oil.
