I was just at the LA Auto Show this weekend and I was very impressed with the Equinox/Terrain and Tucson. I would be hard pressed to decide which one I liked the most. I felt that these were top of the class for small SUVs.

Anyways........

The new Nox is a looker. Wife really likes it. If I were looking now, it would be a toss up between the Nox and the CRV....

I don't think the CRV can hold a candle to the new Equinox. The old one, yes - but the new one is really improved. The CRV is improved as well - so much better than the early ones - they were awful and ugly as sin.

Wife has had the new Equinox for a week now, and I've tried to drive it as much as possible when she isn't working. My favourite vehicle in this class used to be the Honda CRV, but I would SERIOUSLY consider this Equinox if I was in the market for a new small SUV. This Equinox is remarkably quiet inside and handles quite well, too (the 6 cylinder comes with 18" wheels)

The only thing I have found is that the cargo area is a bit small. I do belive that the CRV, RAV4, Forester etc. have bigger cargo areas.

My wife's company policy is 3 years or 120000 KM before replacement, so I'll see how this vehicle does dependability wise in that time. The 07 Impala that she just got rid of had 130000km on it and only problem was a bad right wheel bearing.

I have noticed that the Equinox has a pressurized 'surge' tank as opposed to the non pressurized coolant reservoir in the Impala. This is hopefully a good thing, because the coolant reservoir in the Impala was quite gooey looking toward the end.

IMO, it's amazing what they will all do to justify adding DexCool to the system.

The 32 mpg doesn't seem to apply to the AWD version.
Also the AWD doesn't have a LOCK function, and so is inferior to those that do, such as Toyota RAV4 and Jeep Patriot.
My own 2009 Patriot, BTW got 33 mpg on a trip to California and back.

How much is 130000km miles?

About 65,000 miles.

So? The equinox is a glorified station wagon. It is not an off-roading truck. For 99% of the population, simple driving skills and an appreciation of physics is all they need for inclement weather driving. Even hills and whatnot can be dealt with via a set of snow tires.

I figure if I want something that does all the 4WD stuff, Ill get a real truck, otherwise, Ill go for MPGs, where it will benefit my pocketbook most in terms of lifecycle cost.

Matter of taste I guess, but I think the Patriot looks like a brick. The Equinox has much nicer lines.

It is a matter of taste. To me the boxy style looks good, the rounded Equinox, etc. looks poofy. Not that there's anything wrong with that, if it's what you like.
Check the combined mileage for Equinox AWD, 23 mpg. O course the 5-speed Patriot is the one which gets the better gas mileage. The CVT, not so much.

I get the previously mentioned gas mileage, and also the benefit of 4WD Lock function. Nothing to do with offroading, really, just extra capability in snow ice, etc.

If you're assertion about simple driving skills, etc. were true, there wouldn't be the carnage and whining every time it snows.

The carnage and whining is because people do not hold the simple driving skills. "Let's drive the same speed over black ice that we do in the summer" is common. There is also the SUV crowd that thinks they are unstoppable, and doesn't realize that 4wd doesnt do much when you hit a patch of ice or have to stop.

That said, there indeed are situations where that stuff is warranted/needed to get around. It all depends upon where you live and what the terrain is like.

I do use the numbers for comparison though, the 1.8L Matrix 5spd gets worse mileage let alone the 2.4L one with an automatic, 7.7L/100km...
I'm going to keep my eye on the Equinox for a used wagon in the future, I'm curious how the 6spd auto will hold up. It must do alot of shifting to get those mileage numbers.
