Hi folks, first time poster. Just picked up a 09' Galant 2.4 four cylinder for the wife. The car has 21,000 miles and I would like to switch it over to synthetic at the next oil change. Any recomendations? Also, anyone know who makes the O'Riellys brand synthetic?

Pennzoil Platinum, Ultra. Nice car, nice engine... Good buy!

Most name brand syns. are good, I wouldn'd fret too much about the choices or you will drive yourself crazy. I don't know who sells oil to O'reilly's, their conventional is lousy IMO. Some off brand syns are pretty good, Supertech syn. from Walmart is OK, I would look for a good deal on a name brand syn. (if it were me) It all depends on how long you want to extend drain intervals. Penz. Platinum and Ultra are good, as the person before me posted. I Myself have used both with no issues. I also really like spending a little extra when I can and get AMSOIL. They have great products and you save money in the long run with fewer oil changes. Point is, use a good name brand that is on sale!

Get Mobil 1 in 5qt. bottle for $21 at walmart.Don't use the filters they sell.Get a pureone or a Motorcraft if they offer one for the Galant.always clean the threads and base plate before installing the filer. They nearly always have machining crud on the threads.

What's the annual mileage (projected) and what are you seeking out of the synthetic oil? What do you consider a sensible service length?

Annual mileage will be 10,000 to 12,000 miles per year. We live in SE Wisconsin so tempretures will vary quite a bit. I would like to extend the life of the oil as long as possible.

this would be what i'd do, but its up to you

for 10,000+ miles/1 year (in no particular order):
-Mobil 1 Extended Performance
-Pennzoil Ultra
-Castrol Edge

for up to 10,000 miles (in no particular order):
-Pennzoil Platinum
-Mobil 1
-Castrol Syntec
-Valvoline Synthetic (cant remember the name)

and if you wanted to do 5000ish miles or less for whatever reason (in no particular order:
-Pennzoil conventional
-Mobil Clean 5000
-Castrol GTX
-Valvoline original (cant remember the name either)

Thanks for all the help folks. Now one last question. If I go with one of the 10,000+ mile oils, do I just change the filter after 6 months and top off?
