2009-2011 Genesis 4.6 V8

Nice. Enjoy. Sounds great. Ive been wanting one. Timing to buy never is right. Top of my list for an affordable and mostly dependable v-8 rwd. Hammer down
This past week my sister was driving a rental Mercedes GLA250. She was happier than a kid in a candy store to get back to her Hyundai Genesis. Said that GLA250 sucks.
Genesis is a nice car. Most parts are never stocked at local parts stores, but thankfully plenty of options online.
Good gas mileage for the power. Pretty comfy and spacious.
Proven ZF 6-speed auto. I did a few drain and fills in one day, and that restored the shift quality greatly.
So far - pretty easy to work on. But it can't stand aftermarket electrical components. Do research on who makes the OEM parts (usually Bosch) and just buy those parts online. Cheaper than same parts from dealership and a Hyundai logo on it.

Well, that didn't take long... 127 days. That's how long alternator #4 lasted. AutoZone Duralast quality at it's finest.
Random fact: in Russian the word "DURA" (for a female) and "DURAK" (for a male) literally means "FOOL". I should've taken it as a red flag from the get go... These Dura-last alternators just don't last.

Ordered a new OEM Hyundai Denso alternator, should arrive in a week. Stand by.

I must ask, but why not OE alternator?

Initially bought the DuraLast, as OE was $300 more. Tried to save a penny. Then Everytime it died I just replaced it under "Lifetime" warranty. So no extra expenses, just time and my labor to replace it. This latest one didn't even last a year, so I'm done with DuraLast. OE is ordered, waiting on its arrival.

RockAuto has Denso.

HVAC Blower motor. Just realized I never mentioned these.
If you buy aftermarket - make sure it has warranty. Replaced 5 in a year until we got a good one (for now). First few ate their chineseum bearings in 1-3 months.
Very easy to replace though. Really wish Volvo took a lesson or two on that...

It's suspension day! Hunting an intermittent squeak, happens on some bumps and low speed turning.

Bonus points if you know what's wrong with this picture:

VERY easy and DIY friendly. I wish all vehicles were that easy!!! Replaced these 8 control arms. As I later learned - the main lower ball joints (in the knuckle assembly) were not included in the replacement kit... Old ones feel great though, I'd even say like new, but still will keep an ear out for them these next few weeks.

As you can see, main lower control arms were twist-ripped on ends that attach to the body/subframe. My guess is previous owner, or dealer we bought this car from, loosened the lower control arms for whatever reason and tightened them not at compressed ride height. I made sure to only tighten bushings with coil springs compressed at ride height. Hoping these new TRQ control arms will last! All new ball joints had very little grease, so I made sure to add a little more.

Cylinder #2 factory ignition coil started missing randomly. Others are likely not far behind at 15 years old. So expensive NGK are going in, which are somehow still cheaper than Hyundai ignition coils.

OE DENSO alternator lasted almost 9 months and died last night, on the highway. I was busy, so sister got the Genesis towed home. A few hours later this hurricane dropped a neighbor's tree on it. Will find out the extent of damage once the tree company cleans this up. Seems like garage took most of the damage though.

Don't take these numbers to be exact but from what I can tell somewhere around 90% of the people that actually own a Genesis speak very highly of it while about 90% of the people who don't own a Genesis speak poorly. Be careful who's opinion you listen....
Most people don't like to admit they made a mistake on such a large purchase either. You will find very few that say what they bought and drive is junk no matter the make.

CORRECTION. The OE DENSO alternator is still good!!! Unfortunately the issue with car dying on the highway is related to communication issue somewhere. Now to investigate that U0100 code... Got tips?

I would start with ground wires. Battery to body\engine etc. Then check ecu\pcm connections . No parts required. Does it start and run again after a reset ? Battery disconnected for 15 min to reset

Had the battery disconnected for couple hours, as it was on a charger. Car does not run. Dashboard lights up and goes through its checks, but starter never even tried to crank. Fuses look good, all easily accessible grounds look great: no dirt or corrosion. Will check every plug to ECU/PCM after work.

Check starter relay and fuse. There maybe a similar relay you can swap for testing. Then see if power is getting to starter when ignition is in crank position. Security\anti-theft system issue maybe ? Something obviously is keeping the starter from engaging.

Checked everything, all is good. ECU still not reacting. Opened it up to find a burned element inside. Will try to repair first. If that doesn't work, then eBay used ECU and onto the dealer for programming.
