Very excited....just got my boy a lightly used 2008 VW Rabbit. It has the 5 cylinder, 2.5 liter engine. Wow this little car will 'get it'! I am very impressed. Being in cold country, I think I am planning to run Valvoline Synpower 5w30, which is an approved VW oil.....one of the few in the US.

Congrats on the new ride!

Valvoline Synpower 5w30 MST is an approved VW 502.00 oil, but the normal Synpower 5w30 is not.

Mobil 1 0w-40 is a VW 502.00 approved oil that is much easier to find.

Nice car!

LOVE the Red...

My 1986 Jetta is over 340k! Keeps on going and going.

He looks happy. I would be.

Take care, bill

BTW BigJohn, you can pick up the latest spec 504.00 rated Mobil-1 ESP 5w30 at your local Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner dealers. Just ask for part #68001334AA.

Cheers

I've sent an e-mail to Mobil, to ask if they'll redeem the rebate on a purchase of 5 of the 1L bottles. I haven't heard back as of yet. I'll let you know what they say, when I get something back from them.

Just a FYI,, VW doesn't approve the 504.00 gas specification for use in North America. They still recommend the 502.00 due to the incredibly high sulfer content of our gasoline fuels (compare 300-1000PPM for North America against 15 PPM for EU) and the need to combat this. The 504/507 spec is sold here for use in the DPF equipped diesels.

Also, as mentioned previously, none of the 'over-the-counter' 5w30's meet euro specs. They're just not robust enough.

Mobil-1 0W-40, Castrol 0W-30;5W-40, Valvoline 5W-40 are all readily available oils that meet the 502.00 spec. High Mileage Mobil-1 products also meet the requisite ACEA A3/B4.

Enjoy the Rabbit. I loved that car when I was car shopping. I wanted a new one but for 2009 they are rare due to the cessation of production back in October, 2008. The power output is fantastic for the size of the Rabbit.

I'd look for a set of 16" Magne-cours wheels that someone has replaced and put them on there and keep the steelies for winter use. And of course I just LOVE red cars!

The only question is: Is it a 5 speed or automatic?

Somebody needs to tell Volkswagen this...

My GTI started life as a VWoA corporate car and was serviced with 504.00 oil. Dealers are also using 504.00, and selling it for use, in gasoline engined cars.

I don't know what you consider "over the counter", but I can get at least three different 504.00 certified 5w30 oils easily. In fact, I can find it more easily than a 502.00 product.

Despite the numerous claims I've seen tossed about here, Castrol Syntec 0w30 is not certified to any VW specification, anywhere. The only 502.00 certified Castrol products commonly available in the NA market are SLX Professional 5w30 and Syntec 5W-40. There is also no 502.00 certified Valvoline product commonly available in the North American market, despite claims to the contrary.

Of course, if you've got info that supersedes Volkswagen's official factory service data, I'll be glad to be put straight on the matter.

Cheers

Nice car man! My brother has a highly modded GTI Farenheit Edition with the DSG transmission in it, and man does that thing haul! Handles great too. Personally, I like the look of yours better, more euro looking with the black side molding. All you need is to lower it and add dome deep dish wheels

I just wish they put the VR6 in them yet and not just in the more expensive R32.

Nice car! We have a 4dr, MT with sunroof and 16" alloys. Great, fun car, and we average 26-27 MPG in pure city driving. Our one gripe would be that highway mileage only creeps up to ~29-30 MPG, it is not a highway car.

We have done two oil changes, one with Amsoil euro 5w-40, and now Im going to Schaeffer's 5w-40 in all our cars/trucks, since most of our cars are specced for a 40wt oil anyway...

Valvoline synpower 5w-40 is available in some auto parts stores and meets the VW spec, IIRC. I think that GC 0w30 also does, and that might be a nice pick. M1 0w-40 is a hit or miss pick, but in engines where it does well, it seems to do REALLY well.

Run some UOAs, and if you have the AT, service that thing OFTEN!

Yeah, they come in 5 door. Matter of fact, the 5 door with automatic transmissions are the most popular according to the dealer. My kid specifically wanted the 3 door and the manual transmission, which is what this one is.

This car is the Rabbit S. Can anyone tell me what the "S" stands for?

What? Are you saying SYNTEC 0w30 isn't certified for VW spec's?

Because the bottle I'm holding in my hand says it meets the "VW 502 00." (Among others.)

That or M1 0W-40 would be my first choice for this engine. One of my friends has one identical to the pic and loves it...the thread starter should run down to Autozone and stock up on SYNTEC 0w30 while it is on sale...

The 5W-40 SYNTEC is used by at least one local VW dealer...
You do realize that "meets" and "certified" are not synonyms, right? That little detail makes all the difference.

Some people may easily be duped by their own misinterpretation of the English language, but Volkswagen has no such problem, despite German being their native tongue.
