2008 Volvo C30

I Like small hatches. My mother and father had them as commuter cars at different times while I was growing up.

I just wish they had a much less excessive engine. 227hp is way too much for that little thing. I can get 36-40 highway in my saab 9-3 which will have gobs more space, and it moves well with 175hp./195 lb-ft. Where is the "economical" engine in this car, Volvo??? Where are some real "economy" specs?

Oh I forgot, your typical buyer has their coach bag and $20k in CC debt - they can't be worried about living within their means.

BAH!

I saw one of these the other day in my neighborhood. I love the hatchback glass. A nice historical nod to the early 70's P1800 wagon...very similar rear glass.

Very nice looking car. Volvo is taking aim at the Mini Cooper crowd here.

Volvo C39
2.5-liter Turbocharged
5 Cylinders
227 horsepower
236 pound-feet of torque

Acura (Honda) RDX
2.3-liter Turbocharged
4 Cylinders
240 horsepower
260 pound-feet of torque

I dont think you can compare Volvo and Honda safety.

The RDX is unproven, and very well may have issues down the line. May not, but then again, lots of Volvo vehicles go hundreds and hundreds of thousands of miles too...

Closest model rated on J.D. Power is the '07 S40. It gets "average" for mechanical quality and design.

The '07 Civic gets "better than average/among the best" for mechanical quality and design.

Plus I like doing business with a company that doesn't blatantly spend the money I pay them for a car for gay pride parades and gay magazine ads.

I like it a lot in looks. However the lack of fun to drive factor sounds blah to me.....At least its properly powered with a decent engine for the US market.

what is decent about that engine for the US market, except that it creates more stupidity spending and indebtedness due to higher energy costs???

THe coupling of a powerful engine with a lack of fun to drive makes it an even poorer coupling.

Put a small diesel or a nice little low pressure turbo in there, get over 40 MPG, and there is a winner...

Alas, people cant get over HP ratings.

They have to compete with the A3 and the other small German hatches that have gobs of horsepower. Apparently Volvo puts the diesel 5-cylinder in the C30 in Europe. There are diesels available in Europe for the competitors- which is irritating. Ford even said they have no plans for diesels in ANY of thier cars (even import brands) until after 2010. I'd be all over the C30 if they brought the diesel here, even though the car it WAY too small (width-wise) for me.

This C30 is what got me into an '07 S60R, believe it or not. I went to the Volvo dealer to look at an S40 knowing that the interior is similar in the C30, found that I wasn't too comfortable in it so I looked at an S60R and fell in love with it again like I did at the auto show. That unique blue leather interior is so cool! The rest is financial history

Dude, your life is going to get a WHOLE LOT TOUGHER over the next few years if you don't get over your bible, lighten up, open your mind and progress into the future with the rest of the world...!

I don't want my money going to anybody specifically because of their sexual orientation (hetero, homo, bi, whatever). I think that there are hungry people, abused children, boy scouts that are more deserving by definition than people who stick whatever body part wherever.

You can quote me on it.
And I like my Bible.

You can quote me on it.

I disagree. Even your beloved (economy) Saab was a failure in the US market and dropped.

Fuel economy is not a top priority of sporty hatch buyers in the US market. Its also a very niche market. I don't think much of it however I only drive about 7500 miles/year in a 23MPG fun to drive hatchback.

Just so you know....car manufacturers and dealerships don't 'support' or advertise to the gay sector because they support their cause....they simply identified a hole in the market and are capitalizing on it. Gays and lesbians have the highest percent of disposable income of any other sector of the public. Companies that pass them up in this day and age are fiscally ignorant.

I assure you that no car company really concerns itself with people's sex lives, unlike you, who seems to be a little too preoccupied with it.

Houses and bedrooms have doors for a reason. Keep your nose in your own and by all means, don't buy a GAY CAR. They don't want your business.

SARCASM ON

Remember, one is only allowed to boycott if the cause is championed by the left.

If one is conservative, you are not free to make the same types of decisions that liberals make, when it comes to spending money because you are not smart enough, not progressive enought, too bigoted, and basically not competent to make judgments unless you are socially enlightened like the left.

/SARCASM OFF

Now can we get back to talking about cars before the R/S/P filter and locks kick in?

Youre right... they dropped the 175 hp version of my car, for more power, because that is what the MASSES want, and what company A,B,C, and D provided to them and advertise on the idiot box. It is merely through portrayal of their potential beauty and superior social stature should they have more HP that makes them want it, not because they can ever use it other than to mash the go pedal and race from the stoplight better. Similarly, my MB diesel makes 120hp at full boost if Im lucky. Newer versions have much more power (fortunately with the same or better fuel economy though), and capability, but still at least cater to the el cheapo diesel crowd (another thing that has been killed away by idiocy in this country). Is that bad? Is that good? Is it indifferent?

For anyone to tell me that economy isnt the priority of sporty hatch drivers, when many of these same schmucks who don't care about economy, and care more about power and showing off are the same ones whom ultimately Ill be forced to bail out from their subprime mortgages, credit card debt, etc. is unacceptable.

Even more unacceptable is the fact that the bulk of idiots everywhere make it impossible for me to buy a decent car with an MT anymore. It is the decisions of this bulk of people who care more about coach bags, name brand this and that, and having over 200 hp from their car, while carrying excessive debt that impedes what I want. So why shouldnt I be against that???

I wear a rolex, but its because I carry no CC debt and paid for it cash. I bought a semi-luxury car, and paid cash for it. I have a lot of decent nice stuff, but I pay for it and dont carry debt except for a reasonable mortgage. Why? Because I dont believe in maintaining unsustainable behaviors. Am I lucky? Yes. But when the masses degrade what I desire and would like to the point where it is not even an option or loss leader anymore, then it isnt a point of getting with the times (which given the times, is even more pointed towards fuel economy and fiscal responsibility), but rather my desires being harmed (rather than celebrated, which obvisously wont happen because Im an evil white male professional) by the choices of the masses.

Please do keep in mind that I do not intend to clump you with the masses of idiots because of your car choice. It is merely the point that you made which seems to drive the decisions of car offerings, and thus spoils it for the likes of me. If volvo wants to offer a high performance engine, great... but too many people have their priorities to far out of line, and it is the responsible folks who pay for it. Probably 2 in 4 volvo (or MB, or saab, or BMW, or lexus, etc., etc) would be better off purchasing a kia than the car they are driving. Unsustainable behaviors yield big trouble...
