Yes and no.

Yes- Mobil 1 0W-40 in our '04 SAAB 9-5 2.3L, 5K OCIs. (engine has the rep for being a "sludgemonster," and this is specifically the recommended oil.

No- Pennzoil dino 10W-30 in our '02 Dodge Dakota 3.9L V-6, because that's what the dealer puts in under the maintenance agreement every 3K. That agreement expires this summer, and since the truck is only driven about 10K per year, I'm going to PP 10W-30, a good extended change filter, and yearly OCIs.

I am with Rico, viz:
Mobil 1 0W-40 in the 2001 VW Passat 1.8T, but Castrol GTX 5W-30 dino in the 2003 Dodge Stratus 2.4L and 2005 Toyota Camry, and Castrol GTX HM 10W-40 in the 1996 Audi A4 2.8Q.

Yes and no.

My 1998 Taurus wagon with 3.0 Duratec, bought in January:
Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30, intending 6K changes. Unknown synthetic in transaxle per previous owner's shop paperwork; will use Red Line D4 or Amsoil ATF next change.

Stepfather's 1984 Mazda B2000 pickup:
conventional all the way.
Truck has front engine seal and transmission leaks and was not particularly well maintained before we bought it several years ago, so I just use whatever decent 10W-40 dino oils are on sale. Also, the JATCO tranny takes Type F, and the only synthetic Type F to my knowledge is Red Line's racing ATF. Given the leak and regular topping, I can't justify a switch.

i used synth twice - QS advanced engine and Amsoil. unfortunately it was a leaky car - so i went back to dino and the leak slowed. but during the time i had synth i noticed no difference in performance or milage. so i've stuck with dino since. i dont mind doing oil changes more often - im one of those that likes to change their oil. doing it more often give me more peace of mind. so synth is just not worth the extra few dollars for me

Synthetic year round. The longer oci's are great. I like the idea of one oil change a year. It's good on the wallet and environment. No problems with the cars, so far.

Are you serious? Only one oil change per year? May I ask what cars do you own with synthetic oil and one oil change per year?

TopDog - I just do once a year oil and filter changes with Amsoil synthetic oil on my 1983 Chevy Van, my 1997 Chevy Venture and my 2006 Honda Civic Si.

TimVipond: Interesting. I will do additional research re Amsoil. May have to start using in my FJ Cruiser. Thanks for the info.

Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 full synthetic??????????? More like grp III. Can't beat the price at AAP. $2.89 per quart with their BOGOF deal. I've 36 qts now, buying 24 more tomorrow.

As long as I can keep buying Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 for less than $3.00 a qt; I will be using it. I now have 18 qts of it, need to locate another AA.

2007 Dodge Caliber R/T - Pennzoil Platinum 5w20
2000 Neon SE - Castrol GTX 5W30

Now I am using Synlube in my Nissan, since I don't have to change the oil in 150000miles. In our Mercedes we are now using Royal Purple 5/30 and when we follow the OLM, we change oil every 18-19000 mile. Of course, the use of UOA have confirmed that this is OK. Going to swithch to Synlube in the Mercedes too, since this oil is performing so much better than all other oils we have been using for the last 25 years(Mobil1, Castrol, Amsoil, Esso, RP, Shell Helix and several others).

05 Maxima, currently GC Gold
97 Nissan PU, currently PP 5W-30, also had M1 and GC

BITOG has opened my eyes beyond M1 and is dragging me, kicking and screaming, to longer OCI's.

Mike
