'97 and '98 4.2 had serious issue's. My last '03 F-150 with this engine was bullet proof, as is my current '08. Consumer report's rated the 2004-08 F-150, with the V-6, the best built full size pick up ever made. Incidentally, my fuel economy is pretty good too with the manual 5 speed and a 3.31 gear. Mine takes 6.5 qts. to bring it up to the full mark on the dip stick. It seems to really like Motorcraft 5/20 oil.

Another one of those "limited edition" 7 qt oil pans.

On a serious note, I have that CR magazine with that article around here somewhere.
I travel 178 miles one way to a doctor every 2 weeks. The speed limit is 75 mph but I do 60-65 mph and average 22 mpg.

Guys- interestingly when they back specced the 4.2 for 5w-20, it was only when operated below 8500lbs GVW. Since I pull a 5000lb camper with my 2000 F150- 4.2L, I must run 5w30, which I have been doing since my second change with this truck. I just switched today to 15w40. I am pulling with 4.56-1 gears and 2750-2900RPM, and via scangauge the engine coolant is about 8 degrees hotter (from 202-210). I figure the 15w40 can only help given the load I put on this truck. BTW- I am at 119K+ miles, and she runs real good. Much better since I changed the coil and plug wires anyway. I plan to submit the last 5w30 fill for analysis (already pulled the sample) to see how it held up and what the wear was like. It was G-Oil 5w30, so it should be an analysis of value to the community. about 3000 miles on the run, with about 700miles of it pulling said camper at rather elevated RPM.

I ran 10W30 Chevron Supreme in my 97.

I thought about rotella 10w30, but I want to run one oil in all my ope and my truck. That leaves only the other two vehicles on pcmo.
