Just recently I noticed a few drops of oil under my truck. I have been wanting to switch to a High Mileage oil but am not sure what is best for my type of driving. I do about 90% highway driving and the rest, usually 3-5 mile trips.
I like the idea that most High Mileage oils are semi synthetic, which means I can do long term OCI's. I want a High Mileage oil that I can put 7.5K-10K miles on easily without having to worry. I plan on using a Fram Ultra oil filter. Also, I will add a can of Lubro-Moly. I can use either 5W20 or 5W30, it doesn't matter. Give me some suggestions.
 
MaxLife full synthetic.

I don't know the reccomended OCI of your Ford but I would strongly suggest against a 7.5-10k mile run on synthetic blends. At most they seem to be 25% synthetic 75% conventional.
 
QS Defy, Maxlife. I wouldn't push them to 10k though. I like Pennzoil High Mileage too but at 5k OCIs. Have you tried to find what is leaking? Im not real familiar with the 4.2. I had an oil filter adapter leak on a Ford V-6 before and it was an easy fix.
 
Are your oil pan bolts tight? My wife has about 170,000 miles on her 2005 Explorer with the 4,6 and her underside is dry. She ran Motorcraft 5W-20 for the first 75,000 miles then full synthetics there after. The full synthetics are run for ~8500 miles. The Motorcraft 5w-20 was run for 5000 mile intervals.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 5w30. It has done well in my vehicles in general, but seems to have quickly stopped a couple small leaks in my F-150.
 
If your going 7k plus definitely go with maxlife full synthetic, Mobil 1 High Mileage if going for 10k, either way 5w30 would be my choice to buffer any shear, dilution etc plus your down south right.
 
Pushing that far I see only two options, Mobil 1 High Mileage or Maxlife full synthetic. Since Mobil 1 makes a high mileage 5w20, I think you should take advantage of that.
 
Are you planning on running a 7500 mile OCI so you can get 2 runs with a Fram Ultra?

M1 or Maxlife full synthetic.. whichever is cheaper and easiest to find. Does the truck have any noticeable consumption?
 
I've had good luck with MaxLife, MaxLife Synthetic and Pennzoil High Mileage all slowing down or completely stopping leaks. Not as much luck with Mobil 1 High Mileage in terms of leak stopping. I'd use MaxLife Synthetic in my Firebird, but it's prone to intake manifold gasket failure and I plan on getting the oil analyzed at every oil change and I don't like how the sodium they use can mask a potential coolant leak. If you're not worried about the sodium showing up in a used oil analysis, I'd go with MaxLife Synthetic.
 
While at Walmart tonight I took a ride over to the oil section. I think I have my choice narrowed down to either Valvoline MaxLife Synthetic Blend or Pennzoil High Mileage. Is Pennzoil High Mileage a syn blend?

Drops under the car by themselves do not demand a change in oil....it's the drop in level on the dipstick that determines the urgency here. All the suggestions thus far are premature.

HOW MUCH does the level drop on the dipstick between OCs?
How many miles between OCs?
How much a drop on the dipstick (typically it's a quart between F and L) over how many miles?

I would say it's fair to assume Pennzoil high mileage has some synthetic base oils in the mix, maybe some GTL?


I looked at each individual bottle of oil in that chart and it seems that Pennzoil High Mileage and Quaker State Defy have the most Boron, Moly, and Calcium. Would QS DEFY also be a choice to consider?
 
If it's a small leak, Mobil 1 High Mileage will probably fix it. MaxLife red bottle will almost certainly fix it. With 90% highway miles, I think even the MaxLife will go 10k. As always, keep it topped off and get a used oil analysis if you have doubts down the road.
