Yes it is available... in fact there is some M01 still on the shelf. LOL! I just didn't realize that it meets VW requirements. The condition of my motor is brand new... in fact it's not even in the states yet. I just wanted to go ahead and know what oil to use. It's great to have people like you guys to learn from. In fact I have taught my father some of the things that I have learned about oil here on this site. He is insistant about using Greased Lightning.

In regards to VW's, I intend to go synthetic in my '88 16V Scirocco...what is the VW requirement and which is the best oil to go with?

I had an '89 Scirocco, although mine had the 2v engine. Here's what the '89 manual lists:

Full synthetic oil: VW 500.00, VW 500.00 and VW 505.00. Since VW 500.00 has been replaced by VW 502.00 many years ago.

In the case of full synthetic oil, no specific viscosity or ambient temperature range is listed.

Multigrade oil (non-full synth): VW 501.01
viscosities from 5W-20 to 20W-50, depending on ambient temps.

Single weight oil, depending on ambient temp:
10W under 20 degr F
20W between 45 and 15 degr F
30W between 85 and 30 degr F
40W above 68 degr F

I ran 15W-40 and 5W-40 in my 1.8 l Scirocco engine. Let oil consumption be your guide when choosing a viscosity between 5W-40 and 15W-40. xW-30 oil lead to oil pressure drop and the oil pressure buzzer going off after prolonged high speed driving. Let me know if you want to see a scan of the'89 VW oil requirement chart.

I can't believe the VW dealer does not have or know of an oil that meets the vehicle that it's selling's oil specs. Think I'll go by the shop tomorrow.

I found the same thing out in '96. I also found out they couldn't fix the car properly or in a timely manner. This was quite upsetting to me then. Since then I have learned to accept incompetence, disinterest, and lack of knowledge as the norm. Sad, isn't it?

Hi,
Gilitar - you said;
"So no worries about shearing in a hot environment with M1 0w40? "

I strongly suggest you ask Porsche, MB and AMG as well as the other Manufacturers who factory fill with this oil. It is used exclusivly worldwide in these vehicles

It thins about as much as Amsoil thickens!

Doug

I'm not a VW expert (only bimmers), but I would not hessitate to use either Castrol 0-30 (GC), the 5-40 (BC) [or 5-50], or Valvoline Synpower 5-40. All will do very well with 10k OCI's (or whatever VW recommends).

My personal pic would be either BC or Synpower 5-40's....

I just started thinking about Rotella 5w-40. Has anyone tried this in a turbo VW application?

I just found out from VW that there is NO VW 504.00 on the market in the US. Yes, you might be able to order some, but there is none that is readily available. The only place you can buy this oil is at the dealership.

I wonder when our uber oil companies

here in the U.S. will develop an oil to meet these new expectations. Oil sucks here in the U.S. just like oil companies that make the oil.

In case you weren't aware, ELF Solaris LLX synthetic is available online and meets VW 504.00:

Thanks for the info Andy, but that stuff is $11.00 a liter. I think it will be cheaper to just buy from the dealer. Does anyone know the recommended OCI for the new 2.0T?
