2006 Honda Civic EX - how many miles on factory fill?

Honda is pretty specific about their description for "severe service", and its not all that cautious. Only a small minority of drivers would fit their definitiom.

I left the factory oil in for 5k, my manual specifically says not to change it early. I went with Chevron dino for the 5k change. At 10k I changed to Mobil 1 and will likely do 10k intervals from now on. My driving is very easy on oil, almost all highway, very few short trips, no long idling periods.

Ah yes the super secret special break-in oil yaya dance.

Since you've properly ignored the manuals break-in procedure, dump the oil now and put in good 'ol Havoline. Change it again at 1K and 5K.

Gentle break-ins are for the owner, not the car, and 10K initial fills keep the Lemmings away from the dealer.

Congratulations on not being a lemming.

Pretty much doesn't matter. I personally would change at 3K miles max. I changed over my 2L Sentra at less than 30 miles with Mobil 1. It uses maybe an ounce every couple of thousand miles (after 65K miles now)

I don't know about BMW...but Honda engines just love to rev. The stock redline is nowhere near the limit of those engines...so...rev it hard during break-in!

I've done this to my Honda bikes, which is no different than a Honda car engine, except the tranny and engine share the same bath of oil....

I think the whole "Super Special Honda Break-In Oil" is a myth. Some manuals mention not changing until a certain point, some don't. It's really anyone's guess. This topic has been debated for years here, and everyone has their opinion. FWIW I changed the oil in my Honda Pilot at 2500, 5000 and again at 7500 miles with Exxon 5w20. Due to the high wear numbers I have seen on UOAs of the 3.5 motor, I saw no reason to run long OCIs in the beginning. On the the next fill, I am switching to full Syn. Not sure if Honda used their "break-in" oil back in 96, but my Integra still runs great at 125,000 miles with the first oil change at 1000 miles by the previous owner

Just got a 06 Accord, V6. Asked the dealer about at how many miles to change, he said 4500, regardless of the OLM. Also, I wouldn't call it "super special....." but there is proof that the oil Honda puts in at factory fill is NOT the same thing that you can get off the shelf. Also, there are a lot of elements and compounds that are not tested for 20 bucks that we know nothing of. A full spectrum of tests would costs thousands of dollars.

To leave the oil in, and for how long are the questions ..... as to the fact of the oil being a myth it has been well documented that the oil is different in that it has loads of Moly.

Now as to why the Moly. is in there ... well that can start another debate.

To the notion of: Honda's love to be run up to the redline during break-in ... that I have never heard and I guess is another debate .... with my vote being a 'NO' for any new automobile engine.

Since nobody has a VOA on the oil before it's been run in an engine, there is no 'proof' that this isn't an assembly lube.

If you think the Moly matters, Havoline has just as much, so do a few early OCIs with Havoline.
