On the way back from lunch today, the Accord hit 120,000 miles. What maintenance would you guys recommend? Im pretty good about keeping up with preventative maintenance but I figured I would ask to see if I was missing anything. At 100K miles (about 2 years and 4 months ago), I had the valves adjusted, spark plugs replaced, coolant replaced, brake fluid replaced, power steering fluid replaced, engine air filter and cabin air filter replaced, and serpentine belt and tensioner replaced. Oil changes are every 5K / 6 months (or sooner in the past), transmission drain and refills are preformed every 10,000 miles / 1 year. The car is in decent shape, rotors and pads were replaced about a year ago, and 5 or 6 months ago the tires were replaced. Only issue with the vehicle is the steering acts wonky in the morning on the first turn (out of the drive way). The steering wheel jerks while being turned, but after being straightened out it does not act up any more until next time, it only happens intermittently. So any suggestions maintenance wise? I though about the PCV valve, maybe a brake fluid or coolant flush? Ready for another engine filter or cabin air filter? What do you guys think? Also, all fluids during my ownership have been Honda Genuine except for the engine oil, which has always been 5w20 or 0w20 full synthetic.

Change the oil and drive on. Maybe check cabin and air filter that is it.

It only has been 20k since you last did everything so why spend the money or time.

Well I have only owned it since 97,000 miles. I had all of that done to "start fresh". How often would you recommend air filter, and fluid changes for the coolant and brake fluid? Both engine and cabin air filters are Honda OEM.

If 10k is good then 5k must be even better!

Yes, I really think this is the way to go. Many Honda owners follow the 1 year drain and fill practice. It only drains 3 quarts once a year. Only cost me about $30 per drain. $30 once a year for peace of mind...worth it. I know plenty of Honda owners that have had problems with their transmissions, myself included.

I didn't realize Honda transmissions were so problematic that they required such frequent maintenance. Interesting.

Bank the money. Don't spend too much on maintenance it's not fool proof. Heck you've changed your oil at average 2.5K miles over the last 4 Oci according to your UOA.

Timing Belt & Water-pump were due at 105,000 miles. This is an interference engine! Please do not skimp on this service.

Nope. That is a timing chain engine for sure.

He just bought the car at 97K with probably an unknown maintenance history. 10K mile transmission drain/fills are a good idea for the time being until he swaps out most of the fluid with 3 drain and drops.

He replaced the transmission

This is true. Around 100K miles it began to act up in 5th with a flare into overdrive, and when stopping it would jolt into first gear. The new transmission will continue to have 10K FCI going forward. Ive invested in putting a new transmission in it so the whole car will continue to be maintained at a reasonable level. So based on the comments I guess I should be good for a while now. Hoping and praying it gives me another 5+ years of reliable service.

About the maintenance history, it was a "northern" car most of its life, spending the majority of time in Virginia. I bought it from our local Dodge Chrysler Jeep dealer 2+ years ago. Shortly after purchasing it I was at our local car wash and I saw a guy eyeing it. He eventually approached me and asked me where I purchased it, I told him and he confirmed that it was his previous car. He traded it in for a new Ram. He asked me if he could buy it back =P I politely declined his offer, but I did take the opportunity to ask him what sort of problems/maintenance it had experienced in the past. Only issue it had in 97K miles was 1 O2 sensor. And only other maintenance other than oil changes was one P/S fluid change and one transmission fluid change.

I believe Honda recommends brake fluid every 4 years and has no bearing on mileage.

Hold on a second here; are you talking about Honda transmission mated to 4-cyl engine going to lunch at 6yr/100K miles? How did that happen?

I couldn't tell you. I know that I would have done more than one "flush" in 100K miles, and who knows where it was performed and with what fluid.

As far as I know there lots and lots of 4-cyl Honda which never gets its transmission fluid changed and they run forever.

Don't know why your dumping trans. fluid out every year. The historical transmission problems were with the previous generation and the first two years of the next generation, which is what you have. Problem was overheating. Honda fixed that with oil spray jets on the third gear. Also wondering why your dumping a perfectly good "full syn" oil out at every 5K. Bet if you tested the oil at 5K, it would still be good to go.

I know they have improved drastically since the problem years, but a once yearly DRAIN that only removes 3 quarts, seems very prudent in my eyes. I'm not asking anyone to follow this procedure, its my choice and I think its a wise one. An oil changes twice a year, and transmission drain and fill once a year is SO inexpensive. I know this is a cliche phrase but its cheap insurance. And if you cant accept what I just said then accept the the fact that it gives me warm fuzzy's
