2006 Ford Fusion V6

I just bought a 2006 Ford Fusion V6 recently and would like to get some opinions on which oil to use. The engine is a 3.0L 24valve duratec.

The car has 130k km on it and I think I would like to use a Synthetic that I would only need to change once per year. The car will not be driven much, probably less than 1000km per month.

Would it be okay to use Mobil 1 5W20 or Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 and only change it once per year or is that a bad idea?

I'm also planning on changing the transmission fluid and using Amsoil Universal ATF, but I guess that is a topic for another thread.

I don't know the previous maintenance history of the car but so far it seems to run very well. Any input is appreciated!

If most of the trips in this car is more than 10-15 highway miles then 1 year OCI should be okay with good synthetic oil such as M1 or PP, also you should use good oil filter such as Purolator Pure One or Bosch Premium.

Your driving style and mileage will have a lot to do with if the oil can go 1 year or not.

Might be worth it to do a few short oil changes to help clean it out since you don't know the maintenance history

The car is mostly just driven short trips around town, to get groceries, takeout, etc. about 10km each way. However, for one weekend about every 2 months it will go from Ottawa to Toronto and back, which is about 1000km round trip. I don't drive very aggressively, the engine will rarely ever go past 5000rpm.

Often in the winter when I drive somewhere, I will already reach my destination and shut the car off before it even reaches full operating temp, so that concerns me a bit.

Your driving cycle is consider severe and I think 1 year OCI is pushing it too far. 6 months would be reasonable.

Yeah, stick to 6 months...spring and fall.

ASM or Mobil 1 Extended Performance could do it, but most wouldn't be comfortable with that.....

Okay, I think based on the feedback I'll probably go with a cheaper conventional oil and change it in May / October each year then.

I've read the Motorcraft 5W20 is a good oil to use, and Motorcraft filters too.

5w20 with a motorcraft filter would be good for that car..With proper care that engine will run well..
