To the OP, if you put DexIII in there, I'd re-do with a synth ATF, like Dex VI or ATF+4. Consider a filter too.....

I do a turkey baster drain and refill (2x) once per year with M1 ATF. As someone else said in a different thread, PS systems get really hot, and they don't hold a great deal of fluid. As a result, it is both advisable and relatively cheap to fill a Dex III spec'd PS system with synthetic fluids as AJ pointed out.

Interesting...
Amsoil ATF is a PAO oil, and I never read any bad reviews from people who used it in their power steering system.

Maybe CHF has a lousy additive package for seals?

I'm getting IR PSF temps of +135f in the Accord, so maybe it's not that hot afterall.

Good info on the BMW PSF filter. A pic or description would be cool, thanks.

This is a reservoir with an integrated filter:
Part #1

Here's one with a replaceable filter; the filter is Part #11 Note that this reservoir also contains two oil strainers- Part #7 and Part #17.

That BMW filter/reservoir is too complex. Not worth swapping out my OE reservoir for. The Magnefine/NTZ/Wix/Ford inline ATF/PSF filters are so much easier to retrofit.

RPM causes PSF temp to rise. Measure temp after a few runs to redline. And, measure temp in time increments to see how slowly the temp drops.

I drive an automatic, but I'll take my gauge with me again. Thanks for the filter pics, gotta roll....

With good reason; on many '80s vintage Bimmers the braking assist was also provided by the P/S pump.

Interesting...
Many GMC vans had hydroboost systems, but their P/S systems were no different from the GMC vans without it.

$1700 for the "Oil Carrier"!

It's one of those times BMW AG charges stupid money for a part that was made in very small numbers and never wears out.

The BMW PSF reservoir has a filter at the bottom. You can buy it from rockauto.com or autohausaz.com

On our 2001 E39 the owne's manual says to only use BMW PSF and the reservoir says to use ATF.
I never tried looking for BMW PSF and I haven't seen any part numbers for it on the net. Initially I used Redline PSF but when it got tough to find locally I just switched to synthetic ATF. Still going strong at 180k, enough though the hoses barely made it 100k...

iirc, some Jeeps require a special PSF and cannot use ATF+4.
