2004 Volvo XC70 cartridge filter

I changed my dad's oil today but could not remove the cover for his oil filter cartridge! It looks like it needs a special tool, one of those filter wrenches that fit over the end of a filter. I've got 4 of them, but none were the right size. Does Volvo sell a specific one to do this job? Once I get the cover off, what am I up against in order to change the internals?

Patman, you do indeed need a special tool. Volvo, IPD and perhaps others sell the tool. You will need the filter cartridge plus the gasket (rubber O-ring I beleive). That's it.

I maybe completely off base since I don't know where the filter housing is located or what it looks like but I'll give it a go anyway. Perhaps using a "GRIP WRENCH", an adjustable rubber wrench with a plastic handle, could work. They're cheap and can be bought at any DIY home centers or probably any large store, ie Walmart or auto shop. If your filter housing is in an accessable location then maybe you could use this wrench to loosen the cap.

Is there an oversized nut on the end like on BMWs? See this page and click on the picture next to step #7 for a bigger picture.

If it looks like that, Sears sells those oversized sockets, 36mm in the case of the BMW.

Otherwise, in a pinch, as Whimsey wrote, a Grip Wrench should work. Those are also available at Sears.

There is no nut on the end, just a tiny little hole in the center of it.

I should've thought of this earlier and asked my dad to pick up the tool when he got the filter cartridge (which also included the rubber o-ring) But the problem was, when he last had his oil changed, it was at a fast lube place, and they told him his car used a regular oil filter. I wouldn't be surprised if they never changed it at all and he's still running the OEM filter cartridge! (which really has me worried since he'll be running this OEM cartridge right up until he hits 12,000km)

Hopefully it's not too expensive at the Volvo dealer, as that's probably where he'll pick up the tool.

One other thing with this car that is a bit of a pain is the removal of the skid plate underneath it. That eats up about 3-4min at the beginning and end of each oil change.

My dad went to the Volvo dealer today and they say they don't sell the oil filter removal tool.

Is there any other way of removing it other than having the exact tool? Ordering it over the internet is a pain, getting stuff shipped from the US is always costly due to brokerage fees. A $5 item costs $50 by the time it gets here.

I'm sure that this cover is torqued so I think you're better off getting a proper tool and using torque wrench at least the first time till you get the feel of how tight they want it. This is what I did on my car.

If you have a few cars with difficult access to drain plug then maybe you can use a topsider. Just a thought.
