Once again, high fuel in the oil and lowered viscosity. Oddly enough though, the iron per km is lower, silicon is lower, lead is the same and only the Copper has went up.
Any ideas? Do I have a problem with the injectors?

I don't seem to be "making oil", my oil level does not go up throughout the interval, even though there is supposedly almost 1 quart extra of fuel in there, unless I burn off oil at the exact same rate as I'm leaking fuel into the oil.

The truck runs great, no romps or stumbles or hesitation. I can't tell from the dipstick if there is fuel in the oil.

My driving habits are: on Fri and Sun I distribute and pick up signs at various intersections, for about 8-12 hrs per night, 350km per night. So I drive to one intersection, stop in park for 1-3 min, put/pick up the sign and then back in to the next stop. The stops can be 50m away or 500m away. But I also do regular street driving and hwy driving during this time so it's not a straight 10 hrs of stop and go. During the week, it's "normal" driving, mixed city and hwy.
I'm going to request that Ford checks the injectors but I'm afraid they will say nothing is wrong and that this is "normal" contamination for vehicles that idle more than "usual"

Is idling in Park different than idling in Drive with the brakes on?

Other than maybe getting an rpm control device to raise the rpms during my idling time, I don't know what to do.. Should I turn the truck off every time I get out of it to put the signs out? It would be a PITA to do that 200 times per night..
 
There is an auxillary PCM available from Ford for those trucks, that will bump up engine idle RPM when the parking brake is engaged. It's standard on the ambulance prep package, and an option for vehicles with PTO accessories, etc.

From what I understand, Ford considers 3-4% fuel dilution normal for the 6.0L......

Very little really with the large sump and the excellent protection of the XD3.

Maybe switch back to 0w40 if you are worried about the viscosity being lowered by the fuel.
 
Actually what I'd rather do is maybe change the oil only at 5-6K km, and leave the filter for another 5-6K run. The 0w30 did very well in the 8700 km interval.

This is true, your wear numbers are very good. I would deem changing the oil more often will not really yield any greater results.

The extra fuel doesn't seem to be affecting wear metal other than copper on the last change. Seeing that it is diesel, it won't affect wear as much as gasoline seeing diesel itself does have some lubrication qualities on its own. It is not near as damaging as the same percentage of gasoline.

The only thing I would counteract is the viscosity thinning which could easily be kept in check with the 0w40.

Your TBN is still really high and changing the oil would be a waste seeing there is lots of active additive still left.

I know, and this is what is bugging me.. if it wasnt' for the fuel dilution and consequent viscosity loss, I could definitely go at least 12-15K.
Looking at the results, I could probably extrapolate that my fuel dilution will increase by 1% every 2000km.

Given the characteristics of this engine, I'd run the most shear stable 5w-40 or 15w-40 you can find. I'd also consider the use of a biodiesel blend like B10 or B20. The BD has excellent lubricity, so fuel dilution isn't as much of a problem.

The 0w40 is very shear stable.

The engine shearing is not bringing the viscosity down, the fuel percentage is.

Quick_lude,

I really don't think you have anything to worry about. You engine wear numbers are still falling with every change.

I would still go to 12-15k but use the 0w40 seeing it is a thick 40 weight.

There is no need to go to a 5w or 15w40.

The first number has nothing to do with this issue.

All you have to do is counteract the fuel dilution. the XD3 0w40 will do that.

Also, does your engine have a PCV valve?

Biodiesel is very hard to get around here, I think only 2 or 3 stations in Toronto have it and they are too far from me.
Using a 5w40 would get very expensive for me, Delvac1 is about $10/L so that would mean $160 oil changes every 10 weeks, no thank you.

A 15w40 is ok for the summer but I'm not crazy about running that in -20 Deg C temps..

My engine has an EGR valve.

I'm not sure how shear stable the 0w40 is considering it sheared badly on my first analysis, maybe adding a few quarts of XD-3 15w40 would be a better idea

Also, like TooSlick said, this engine is very hard on oil even without fuel contamination, very few oils have held up against the HEUI system.
