My buddy's mom drives a '04 Beetle TDI.

His parents' are not to keen on PM or standard service for their vehicles.

Is the Vdub spec 505.01 for '04 TDI's?

From what I have gathered, regular oil change shops don't carry the oil and US oil firms don't make it either.

Is the dealer the only place for her to get the TDI serviced?

What is the OCI?

I have heard that Vdub dealers are not uniform as far as quality service goes.

She is the type that could be sold on a spark plug change on a diesel.

What are your comments, suggestions, or experience with TDI's?

What will happen if she only changes the oil once a year at a quick lube with bulk oil?

The quick answer is YES. VW 505.01. The ones I know that are available are Motul, Castrol and ELF, The OEM recommended OCI is 10,000 miles. A "qwiky lube" place will more than likely get the oil specification incorrect.

Bulk oil + quickee lube = sludge and toasted engine.

For now, the dealer is the only place to get the car serviced unless she buys the oil/filter and watch the service at whereever she wants.

Even with the dealer, she needs to make sure they use the correct oil. Some dealers are stupid and use the wrong oil.

She needs to read the owners manual, get some common sense, and learn a little about her vehicle(like the regular use of a diesel fuel additives, that there are no spark plugs, and what antigel is....).

Visit the tdiclub for more info.

Bardahls and Schaeffers also have the so-called unobtanium 505.01 oil.

Have her call the dealer for a replacement engine price. I think it was around $7000 for a PD-TDI!
This is enough of a reason to use the correct oil, have it changed at the dealer, and keep all the maintenance receipts.

Change the oil at least once a year or 10k miles, whichever 1st.
The UOA history on the TDI is pretty good. Most 505.xx oils are good for 10k easily.
And, the vehicle should've had its 1st oil change before 5k.
