My neighbor is going to be coming over to have his car serviced by me tomorrow and am looking for a good oil to fill the crankcase with.

Now let me preface this by saying that I know that they are ALL good oils. I am looking for an oil that fits my (SUBJECTIVE) needs. I understand that certain engines run smoother/quieter with different brands. Since it's nearly impossible to go wrong, I want a recommendation for an oil that runs as quiet and smooth as possible in the 4.6. He's a bit of a stickler when it comes to service work. I don't want any questions, comments or concerns...

My initial thoughts were MC or Kendall blend or even synthetic as it seems a favorite of many Ford people. The car is driven easy - like I said, it's not about quality. They're all good. I just want quiet and smooth in this particular engine. The grade will be 5W-20 and filtration will be WIX. OCI will be .... Dunno, whenever he wants to change it.

I second the Motorcraft Synthetic Blend $12 for 5 Quart at Walmart or a few buck more at auto parts stores and FL 820 S Filter are a good combination. Thats what I use in my 01 Lincoln.

No. He's a longtime friend of the family.

I'll be buying and he'll be reimbursing me.

Not all of them... At least not ours.

Okay so you ain't doing this for a profit and he's not demanding you use X brand of oil. Okay well if you wanna save him a buck go out and buy the Brand Name oil that is on sale that meets his specs.

My personal recommendation that's free from me to you: Pennzoil Ultra if you think he'll go over 5000 miles and Motorcraft 5w20 if you know he's gonna dump at less than 5000.

Cheerio ol boys!

Edit: Oh yah bro...Motorcraft has been the quietest for me in my Focus. I swear it's quieter than the full synthetics I have run if that means anything to you. I could be making that up but I still swear that's it true!

Pennzoil Platinum 5W20 is the most quiet in my '00 E430 with 4.3L V8. It was fairly noisy with recommended Mobil 1 0W40. Also, it is only $20.50 at Walmart for 5qt jug and it can be used for 7-8k miles OCI or 1 year.

You would be surprised to find that most dealers don't.

The 4 dealers semi-local to me buy the cheapest bulk garbage they can get their hands on, and will only use Motorcraft oil (out of the quart bottles) if it's requested. I've seen many a 3V sludged to [censored] on that off-brand dealership bulk oil.

Not me personally or the garage I work at, but the local Ford dealership.

Yup. They'll install whatever they can to increase the profit margin. Aftermarket brakes, engine/tune up and chassis parts. My friend in the part business supplies them.

Eric, if you haven't already done the work, lemme put in another vote for Motorcraft 5W-20. You can't beat the price at Wally's and it is an excellent oil, especially for Ford modular motors.

The Motorcraft 5W-20 is a very good oil and will work great in the Lincoln. However, I would go to your local Walmart if you have one and get a Motorcraft FL820S filter to use on the Lincoln. I personally believe it is a much better filter than the WIX.

Being a 4.6 owner myself, I HIGHLY recommend Mobil 1 0W-30. You can get it in the 5 qt. jugs at Wal-Mart for $21. My Mustang runs NICE & SMOOTH on it and I plan to do 10K OCIs with a 5K oil filter change.

As a longtime user of both the MC FL820S and the WIX 51372 I am curious as to why you think that. By longtime I mean over 10 years and a lot of miles on my 3 crown vics, including cutting each open from time to time after an oil change. I have never had any issues at all with either in regards to performance or construction. Can you please clarify?

I know it's been a while since I posted this, but I've been both busy and forgetful. As an update, I ended up using MC 5w-20 and the Wix 51372. In spite of the suggestions of a 30 grade oil, I went with the 20 for 2 reasons. One it's a known performer and 2, as I said, the owner is a bit of a stickler on service work and I feel that it's a compromise between using the right stuff and keeping the owner or customer at bay... So, thank you all once again for your thoughts and input!

Yes Johny, I'm in a similar boat here... I too would like to know your thoughts.
