2001 Camry 1MZ-FE MMO

just bought a jug of Quaker State 5w30 and a quart of MMO.
my camry is running pretty smoothly and there are no issues that i know of.
i just wanted to "clean up" the internals a bit since it's known to throw out sludge.

Should i just follow the directions on the back and replace a quart of oil with a quart of MMO? how long of an oci should i run? you tell me haha

Yup - just replace a quart of oil with the MMO, and run the usual OCI you would.

i don't have to worry about MMO thinning out the oil? i'd like full protection throughout the entire OCI

No worries about MMO thinning out your oil and since your car holds 5 quarts of oil there is no problem replacing a quart of oil with a quart of MMO.

Just check your oil level from time to time since the MMO may get into some areas and do some cleaning.

Unless your engine is really really full of gunk your filter should be fine. Some hold more than others. If it gets full it will go into bypass.

Personally I love MMO, but never run it for a full OCI. Just the last few hundred miles. It will thin out the oil a little since its like a straight 5 weight. If I were to run it a full OCI I would bump up a full viscosity grade to something like a HDEO 15w40.

Agree with the others - one full quart MMO for a reasonable OCI.

Also, use it in the gas for several tank fulls during this OCI - then your hitting that upper cylinder area from both directions. Fights possible gummed rings on two fronts.

I run an oversized filter on the Camry when I use MMO just for that reason.

Try Purolator PN:20195, Fram PN:3600, Wix PN:51516 or equivalent; it's the Toyota V8 filter. There are bigger options, but these are great because the longer length makes them easier to service. (Don't have to worry about burns from the exhaust manifold.)

quart capacity with oversized 20195?

It is smart to consider oil thinning when using MMO.
A full qt added for sure will thin the oil, so in summertime you should use a qt or two thicker oil to compensate.
In winter, we can often just add the MMO.

How long is your OCI?
Many use MMO the whole cycle, but I'd use it for the end of a summer cycle.

I agree with IntegraVT on the larger filter.
I have a Wix 51516 on my 1MZFE motor.....LOTS of room to spare.
Identical specifications except that it is longer........the Wix website indicates that it has a better efficiency than the shorter one that is listed for the motor.
Larger filter will give you more storage area for crud, and more media surface to spread the oil flow out over.

For the purolator, I would upgrade to the Pure 1, PL20195
For the Fram (Walmart), I would upgrade to the Extended Guard, XG3600.

On the 1MZFE motor, it is SUPER important to check and verify that the PCV valve is not clogged and that you are actually getting flow through it.
The PCV valve can become clogged, and also the area between the baffel and the top of the valve cover can become clogged.....blocking flow TO the PCV valve.
No PCV flow......you will get "gelling" or sludge in short order.

Is there anything, other than removal and cleaning, that will help reduce/clean any possible buildups in this area? I have used Mobil 1 for years (0W40 for the last couple of OCI's). Would adding MMO for, say, the last 1000 miles of an OCI help clean this area? I have a 99 Avalon, and it is a real pain to remove that back valve cover.
