Hello everyone,
I just bought my brothers camaro with 83,000 miles on it. He always had his oil changed at a 10 minute quick lube.

I have used valvoline max life motor oil but I heard it shinks seals. A friend of mine switched to max life and gain 30 miles a tank.
I don't want switch to synthetic (heard of people who have found leaks).

I drive mostly highways miles and usually change my oil at around 6,000 miles with a A/C or Wix filter.

I know these motors are known to run upward of 200,000 miles, I just want to increase my chances of that. Please suggest an 10w 30 oil that I could pick up at the local Autozone or Murrys.

I had a v8 rebuilt and the rebuilder told me to stick with a pensylania oil like pennsoil and valvoline. opnions?

Havoline?? compared with valvoline / valvoline max life? ( extra mileage is a plus)
Wix filter compared with an A/C delco filers?

Thanks
Brian

If I had this car in MI I'd use PP and don't share your concern for leaks in a 3.8 GM w/83000 miles when you know how your brother ( previous owner) serviced it.

But if I used a dino - it'd be havoline and I'd use 5-30 for winter in M1.

AC Delcos are about WM ST quality so I'd use an ST for $2.07 except winter. For winter the WIX or Napa Gold.

Neither Pennzoil or QS are based in PA anymore and I seriously doubt if they especially use PA crude. Valvoline, I don't know, but they're based in Kentucky. The only major oil you'll get from PA is Brad-Penn (formerly Kendall until their name was bought out).

And I second the Havoline recommendation.

Use any because from my experance the 3.8 will go 200,000 miles on any major brand that is changed at a reasonable 5K OCI. I agree with the WIX/Champ filter suggestions. Use whatever you can get on sale. It's hard to beat a oil filter for 2.07 plus tax.

I like to stay consistant.. In that case I will go with Havoline 10-30(5-30 in winter) with a wix filter. sound good?
What would be the next best thing to Havoline? Pennzoil?

If I decide to use synthetic I will use pennzoil platinum.
Any major reason for using synthetic?
What does SM mean?
The oil anaylsis charts that people post, Where do you get that done at? I don't plan on doing that just be interested on where you would take that to get it done.

Baseoils - Flashpoint on Havo is 450F 232c, Penn 216 5/30
221 10/30. My take is that is more II+ oils in Havoline where Penn is about the same as Shell, Exxon and Valvo dinos. That's not going to make much difference in MI winter but it does in hot summers.
Havo has more moly.

Brianv6 the SM is API rateing on how an oil is tested and it place's a limit on how much ZDDP can be used (to protect cat converters). I could go on about that but to keep it from going into a 5 page tyrant any SM rated oil will do fine for your need's. For an anaylis the easiest one for me to direct you in the right direction would check out the site sponser's on the main page and click blackstone.

Thermactor, you are full of a substance that comes from where the sun don't shine. Go find all the aweful Valvoline reports and post them here, m-kay? And you do realize the base oil bidness is a commodity bidness; the base oil used in Pennzoil from some parts of the country along with the add pack comes from the EXACT same source as what's in brand x.

My fathers truck is a hair shy of 200,000 miles and guess what oil it's had for the majority of those miles? Pennzoil 5w-30. The inside was spotless with not even a hint of varnish when the intake gaskets were changed.

Lay of the cool-aid. You're

and that argument lost a long long time ago.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across like a jerkwod but I'm tired of this myth, as that is what it truly is. Hmmmmmmmmm, I have a great idea for a new Mythbusters episode

Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Valvoline Durablend are garbage and will sludge your engine. PZ/QS needs no further explanation, but Valvoline is well known to produce awful UOAs. As for sludge, well... the company name is ASHland!!!!

Why do you keep repeating this nonsense? What is this stunning anlysis based on?

That's because you don't have a clue as to what you're talking about apparently, and can offer none.

Why don't you post all those awful UOAs? I don't mean one, I mean multiple UOAs confirming that Valvoline SM/SL rated oil is much worse than any other conventional oil. I seriously doubt it's any worse. I've heard it has a weaker add pack, but one that still exceeds the minimum SM rating.

For the new person asking the questions and other reading this.

His post is so full of it PLEASE just ignore him.

Its too bad some folks have to be here to contribute trash.
