Hello,
I am pricing out a Timing belt kit, including waterpump, tensioners, pulleys, etc.

First question, Gates vs Aisin? I assume most people would go with the Aisin, correct?

Second question - what is the appropriate Aisin kit number, for the 4.7L? I am getting hits on the 021, 005, 007, 001. Not sure I am limiting it to the correct 4.7L engine, vs the 3.4.

Thank you.

Definitely Aisin. Genuine Toyota water pump, quality bearings and belts.

The stuff Gates actually makes like belts & hoses are good quality, but Gates might just sell you down the river to the lowest Chinese bidder on the bearings and water pump.

Gates makes the dealer timing kit for the Renault K4M engine used in some Nissan taxicabs, the Chinese bearings are designed to last not much longer than 60,000 Km for that application.

Go through the drill down menu on rockauto.com to find which kit you need.

First off, get the Aisin kit. It will have a Mitsoboshi belt and Koyo idlers, along with the Aisin water pump - all of which are OEM to Toyota. The water pump gasket included in the kit will be identical to the Toyota one which will not be the case for the Chinese Gates pump.

The alignment marks on the Mitsuboshi belt WILL line up properly as opposed to the ones on the Gates belt I once bought. One person can install the timing belt too, whereas the Gates one is going to be slightly thicker and will not stay wrapped around the crank pulley without assistance.

Aisin's site lists the following for the 4.7:

TKT-001 Engine Timing Belt Kit With Water Pump
Hydraulic Tensioner: Not Included
4.7L V8 4663cc 285 CID
2UZFE Desig.

TKT-021 Engine Timing Belt Kit With Water Pump
Hydraulic Tensioner: Included
4.7L V8 4663cc 285 CID
2UZFE Desig.
From 02/99

TKT-025 Engine Timing Belt Kit With Water Pump
Hydraulic Tensioner: Included
5VZFE Desig.
with oil cooler

After 13 years I would replace the hydraulic tensioner, although if it is not leaking I guess it isn't necessary. You will have to re-compress and pin the old one if you don't replace it.

As an aside I just bought and installed an Aisin kit for my Honda which is not the OEM. It fit perfectly and the components were top notch.

Yes, get the Aisin kit. Got mine from Rock Auto. Look on Rock Auto to get the right number. If this is the first time you are changing it, get the one without the hydraulic tensioner. Mine looked new. Just recompressed with a C-clamp. You might consider going to the pink coolant too.

definetely spend the extra money for the Aisin.
Nothing to say bad with Gates, but if you can get the Aisin, get it instead.
Gates would be my 2nd choice.

Memories...I remember the first time I did my tundra timing belt. Not too bad of a job. The hardest part for me was compressing the tensioner and putting in the locking pin.

What was interesting is that both times on my '00 the fan clutch went out within a few months of the belt change. Afterwards someone told me to not lay the clutch and fan assembly face down on the ground. I don't know if there is any truth to that or if it was just bad luck.

I think I did my first one at around 110k and the second one around 200k.

My next tundra I sold before having to do the belt. Mostly due to not needed to haul the dual axle enclosed trailer anymore.
