Hi every one, just bought my first truck 2000 Silverado 1500 5.3L ext z71 4x4 , car ( I mean truck, gotta get use to say truck now ) truck run and drive great, no noise or smoke, it does have 180k miles on it.

their is 2 problem I note, it say " service 4wd light on " I seen this many time on couple friend z71 truck or suv, i dont ever use 4x4 down here, but that something I might need fix in future. and low gas light on and gas gauge needle is moving slow after fill up.

Here come the maintenance, then owner say he using 20w50 on summer
06.gif
and 10w40 on winter. oil cap say 5w30, what weight oil you guy think these 5.3L high miles using ? 10w40 ?

What gear oil for front and diff ? and what gear oil for transfer case. and what transmission fluid it need ? I do not have owner manual , and Im not going to use it to tow anything, but i tow it I need too.

here some pix and some question.
5.0l in the back, I still like it

it that the drain plug ? i seem cant find the fill plug.

I KNOW THE FRAM !! BIG F WORD RIGHT THEIR !
mad.gif

I see the transmission drain plug, should I change the filter or just drain and fill ? transmission fluid still look good, or I just do it all at 1, drain plug and take off pan and change filter . and that oil drain plug, after my friend accident strip the plug, im plan using those fomoto or something plug.

this is transfer case, those 2 plug is drain and fill right ?

thanks !

They're a fairly shallow headed bolt and in there tighter than anyone's business, which makes them easy to strip if you're not paying attention.

The fill plug on that rear differential should be just above the center line of the pinion on the right (passenger) side. It should take the typical 75w or 80w-90 both front and rear.

Those are the drain and fill plugs and the transfer case should be filled with ATF.

As for the "Service 4WD" light, you'll have yo have it scanned, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the encoder motor bad. The fuel light and gauge issue is likely in the fuel pump module.

I'm thinking you might want to consider replacing it if you are going to dump the transmission fluid.

I don't think they meant for those transmission plugs to be removed, at least I have never seen one sucessfully removed. The service 4x4 light may indicate a problem, but some times those things mysteriously come on and go off on their on. Amsoil's web site has nice info for the recomended fluids if you go to the product look up guide to the right of their page.

+1 on the shifter motor and try Chevron Techron in a couple tanks of gas . It has been known to help with sluggish gas gauge readings. No need for such thick oil in a 5.3 , try at most a 10w30 anything thicker and you are just wasting fuel and bogging down the motor.

The "Service 4wd" light is most likely a faulty switch. There was a TSB to replace it in your year truck (and mine).

I use a heavy 30 weight or light 40 weight in summer and 5w30 in winter. I get better UOA with the heavier oil

The transmission drain plug on your/our model trucks always strip like that. They are not on there tight, the plug is made from metal softer than butter. I would drop the pan and change the filter. It is very messy, so it might be better if someone else did it.

You should change the transfer case oil. You will need AUTO-TRAK II fluid. You can sometimes find it for $7 a liter, but you will spend about $15 a liter at the dealer. You need 2 Liters.

The rear differential needs 2.5 quarts of 75w-90 gear oil. The front differential needs a little less than 2 quarts of 80w-90, but you can also use 75w-90.

Engine oil is easy to change.

I am doing a 100k (96K actually) service on my truck. I will be changing the transfer case, and front and rear differentials, and the transmission filter over the next few weeks. I don't have time to do it all at once. I will post some pictures.

I just craw under the truck, rear diff fill plug like you say, it was cover full of gray dirt, so I guest, i dont need take off the cover, cause i love drain and fill the rear diff, but hate to do the cover with gasket.

btw the truck have those push button 4wd high or low or 2wd , dont know if that make any different try to find right fluid for my transfer case.

That engine calls for 5w30. No need for anything heavier. My '03 z71 with the same 5.3 has 170k, and runs very quietly and smoothly on P Ultra or Mobil 1 Extended Performance. Makes around 60 psi at 2200 rpm cruise with about 38-40 psi at idle, hot.

My "Service 4 Wheel Drive" code has come and gone several times with no change in the systems performance. Not an unusual trait for these vehicles. If it remains on after multiple starts, you may need to get it checked out.

You have an automatic transfer case, so you definitely need Auto Trak II.

A TSB is a technical service bulletin. Basically when the manufacturer identifies a known defect and fix, but they don't feel it warrants a recall, they issue a TSB.
