2000 century electric EGR valve

Who knows these things?

I am used to "top mount" electric EGRs where I can access the pintle from below, and poke it with a screwdriver. A parallel hole lets smoke in and it does a 180 degree turn around.

My century threw a P1404 and I took the valve off. Odd thing, has a "flow through" design. Doesn't look to cruddy. Did my typical brake cleaner spray through. (You'd be suprised how often it works.) Pipe to exhaust and intake look clean.

There's an access hole where I can stick a screwdriver and attempt to move the pintle. It's either seriously stuck, or, here's my question:

Is there some sort of stepper motor or gearbox inside this thing? I'm used to the direct solenoid that you can move externally.

Most likely cause of the code is port clog on the intake side. I would recommend you fish something through there and make sure it comes out the other end. You may have to take the TB off to see the other end. The EGR can not be cleaned. Second possibility is failed EGR.

Not only does the port look clear I tried starting the car with the valve off and it wouldnt from the massive vacuum leak.

If it has no external vacuum hose then it is a linear electronic EGR valve and does use a stepper motor.
You cannot move the pintle,forcing it can damage the stepper motor.

These are a fairly common GM fail,i used a cheap BWD replacement from AA in a pinch one Sunday and its been working fine for over a year,the quality seems good.
