For those who have used 0W/5W 20W oils in GDI engines (non - turbo and broken in for sake of argument) - what have been your experiences ? ...Any issues with oil consumption , fuel dilution , etc. ?

Honda and Mazda experience here. No issues, no topoffs needed. 90% highway driving showed no dilution. Typical day is 200 miles.

My PI Ford V10 used a quart of 20 grade between changes but doesn’t burn any 30.

Same on 2017 Tahoe … only when EP dropped to $25/jug … went with that hoping the PAO holds up to DI better …

Went from dealer conventional 5W20 to PUP 5W30 in my 2.4L GDI (non-Turbo) mainly for extended OCIs and better protection. Didn't feel comfortable running conventional more than 5,000 miles. The only thing I noticed was less valvetrain noise with the thicker oil. Next oil change will be with PP Dexos1 Gen2 5W30.

When I got my used Sonata a little more than a year ago, it had been on a steady diet of dealer conventional 5w20. The change in the sump when I bought it was about 5 months old but had only about 400 miles on it. I ran it out to 3200 miles and did an UOA, it seemed fine. It was posted here. It was down to the bottom mark on the dipstick when I changed it though.

Since then I've only run 5w/10w30. The engine seems slightly quieter with it. However, it's still down to the fill mark by 3500 miles or so. I just shrug it off and top off.

The 4 fills since the dealer fill were:
M1 5w30 5200mi - sampled, but not sent in.
Havoline ProDS 10w30 7800mi with 1 qt top off ProDS 5w20 - no sample
Havoline ProDS 5w30 8100mi with 1 qt top off ProDS 5w20 - no sample
Havoline ProDS 10w30 current fill, about 500 miles.

The reason I topped off with 5w20 was that I have a single jug for top off for both cars, which previously was a Dart for my wife, now the Outlander which is still on factory fill, hopefully won't need top-off.

I'm going to back off on the OCI for the ProDS - I saw a UOA for this where the TBN retention wasn't the best. I will sample this fill and see how it is, and at that time send in the M1 sample too.

Our Tuscon came with 5Wx20 factory fill assuming they followed their own recommendation ... that was about 4 years ago and i don't recall any "significant" oil consumption with the factory fill.
However it has not seen any 5Wx20 since then!

Against my better judgement

i have 0Wx20 in another MPFI car (not a GDI) and zero oil consumption but that car is relatively new and may never see another 0Wx20 either ... lol

About 3K into my first oil change on Hertz used Soul--as below, Maxlife 5w20. Everything up to the fill mark and no indication of any oil use, oil looks clean. Open to going to 5w30 in future but used 5w20 on earlier Kia Rio. If I remember correctly, used slight amount of VWB and nothing when using MaxLife.

Two Sonata's:
-First one got up to 88,000 miles (mostly 5W-20)
-Current Sonata in signature (mostly 5W-20)

-Veloster 1.6L (always 5W-20)

No issue what so ever. I've never had to add oil.

My two Fords used a quart of 20 in 1k miles. No issues with 30.

I had a Kia Rondo with the 2.4 and I didn't burn any either with Maxlife 5w20, whereas it would go down about halfway between the marks with other oils.

That said the Rondo had port injection, not DI.

Fuel dilution is a known issue in GDI engines and is reason enough to consider a 5W30 over a 5W20, especially with extended OCIs.

My take is that prudent users in either NA or turbo GDI don't run extended OCIs to begin with...I've used both 5w-20 and 5w30 in either QSUD or PP in my 1.6 NA GDI Hyundai with seemingly not much difference. No marked fuel dilution and no oil consumption over an average 5K OCI. I would hesitate to run either of those oils for 7500 miles under the guise of preventative maintenance.

Did you run a UOA to make that determination?

I agree with this. 5k is a good starting point. If you drive mostly highway miles then 7.5k could be doable. Anything more than that should be backed up by analysis.
