I cut open a PL14610 from my Gf's 2005 Civic 1.7 D17A1 and a PL24651 from my 1999 F-150 4.6. I am dissapotinted with the 14610 as it has a small hole in the media near top of the filter (will be on the bottom of my pic) near the bypass valve. The media is streched tight there as it looks like it really could have used an extra pleat or two. The 24651 looks great on the other hand. I've used purolators for several years and have cut open two other 14610s and they were fine. I used a high speed air cutoff tool to open the filters. Sorry for the poor quality on a few of the pics.

Does not look bad. I do wonder if the weight of the oil pushes the pleats around as you unscrew it and drain it.

But I have always felt that the P1 were a notch below the M1 and D+ and Amsoil Ea.

This thread is of interest to me because I run the same filter in my own Honda. Thanks for going to the trouble of cutting the filter and posting the pictures.

They dont seem any better than an FL 820S

The filter is upside down in the pic, with the bypass valve at the bottom.

The only damage I found is the hole. I cut it open on the opposite side (base end). No damage during removal.

I've been using the PL14610 on our Saturn for a while now. Here are a couple of pictures of one that I cut open a couple years ago. Perfect after a 6K OCI using PP.

trx250x92 - can you count the number of pleats on the PL14610, including the one with the crimp and report back.

My records show that the last PL14610 I cut open had 52 including the crimped pleat. Just wondering if Purolator is trying to cut back on the number of pleats which causes too much space between some of the pleats. Too much space and the pleat can get bent over from oil flow and cause the end of the pleat to tear.

Also, what is the date code on the end of the filter's can?

Mine was torn worse than yours.

Nobody from Engineering ever got back to you, did they? Pretty poor show from their end.

thanks! this confirms pure1 not worth the price. I'm interested in japanese oem filters (toyota, honda) if someone wants to test next time.

Except for the Toyo Roki that is/was(?) used for the S2000, I don't think there was an OEM Japanese Honda oil filter. It was Filtech for a while and now it's Honeywell (parent company of Fram).

I had a 94 Accord with the f22 engine and always used the same filter as you use on her car . I cut three in a row open and every time it had the same torn pleat as yours. I stopped using them.I wish I had a pic so people would actually believe me.

Will do. I received an email response back from Purolator. They are sending me a filter return kit so they can analyze it. I will count the pleats and get the date code before I send it to them.

It does seem to be a recurring issue with some of the Purolators. The Classic that did this on me, I noticed the media seemed to be somewhat stiff and it seemed to tear pretty easily if side pressure was put on it (like oil would if the pleat started to bend over). IMO, Purolator needs to address the root cause of this issue.

I counted 52 pleats and the code is F07D02E2.

I don't think too much space is the problem. Fram OCOD's typically have much larger gaps than that. I think the issue is the strength or composition of the media itself. JMO.
