We are racing a VW GTI with a 2.5 cylinder motor...the motor is stock and we are using M1 0w40 on a 8-10 hour oil change interval. The car is used in Champ Car endurance races, some are 8 hours each. Curios as to the boards thoughts on this oil choice. We do not have a catalytic converter on the car and we do have a catch can/cranckcase ventilation system. Any suggestions or keep using the Mobil 1 0w40 ?

The first 5 cylinder motor I had was in a 1984 Audi GT. Beautiful sounding smooth motor. Plenty of power too with the CSI fuel injection. Design was so good on that car that at 100mph with the sunroof open and the front windows down you could still talk to each other normally. I never had another car like. My 944 Porsche was pretty close though.

When did VW put the I-5 engine in their GTI? Did you do an engine swap or hop up a normal Golf? Just curious.

There are always suggestions but there's nothing inherently wrong with using what you're familiar with and is appropriate for the application. M1 0w40 (FS) for the win!

Two and a half cylinders?

Seriously, which 5-cylinder? NA (Golf Mk.5 and Jetta) or TFSI (RS3 8P/8V and TT-RS 8J/8S)?

On a side note, VW offered Golf GTI Mk.4 with 10 valve and 20 valve 2.3 VR5 engines next to 1.8T versions for European markets.
.

I suggest you check the virgin oil analyses spreadsheet in the VOA subsection. Look for a high high temperature/high shear (HTHS) number of at least 3.5. Higher HTHS typically means better protection.

That must be a little monster if it has the RS3 2.5L engine shoehorned in there. Pics please.

Oh, and the M1 FS 0W-40 Euro (presumably what you're using) is just plain fine.

It was a Jetta motor

0w40 sounds reasonable, Mobil 1 is solid. What oil temps are you running?
220 usually...240 last race on July 21 in Pittsburgh...ambient temps were up there and we were really running the motor hard, redline on every shift. Got 2nd in class though !!
