Hi All.
I’m not sure if this topic has been discussed before, if so please forgive me.
To start, I have 2008 Mazda5 2.3L car and as of now, it is 55,000.00 miles on it. Therefore, my manufacturer warranty is gone in 5k miles. Due to this situation, I want to switch it to long oil change intervals (10K perhaps 15K miles). up to this point, car was on steady diet of Motorcraft 5-w20 synthetic blend. I’m thinking to switch it to Castrol GC 0w30 of mobile 5-w30 extended run.
What do you think, is it wise?
Thanks

You'll probably observe a drop in MPG (and possibly slight drop in performance) if you use GC. If I were to do 15K intervals, I'd probably go with Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Pennzoil Ultra. Castrol Edge might be another option.

Thanks Pete. So i guess 5-w30 will be fine. I have not see Mobil 1 Extended Performance in 5-w20 form.
Thanks

I would do a couple std or shorter OCI with the syn first to get some cleanup done - the high detergent package load in the "synthetics" will be cleaning up tons at first, and I wouldnt want that first syn OCi in MY CC for 10-15K.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W-20, Castrol Edge 5W-20, Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 will most likely all do 12k+ in a Mazda - they are easy on oil. 5w30 can be used if you can't get 20-weight - it won't really make a difference.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W20 or better yet....Mobil 1 Extended Performance 0w20 (would be my choice)...

I believe the 2.3L has a 5W20 recommend in their manual. Use what the manufacture recommends.

Both of these oils can be purchased at WalMart...the 5W20 in 5 quart jugs...and the 0W20 in quart sizes only.

You can easily do 1 year OCI's (12 t0 15,000K). Be sure to use a quality filter...such as a Mobil 1 or Pureolator PureOne.

I am using Mobil 1 5w20 Extended Protection in both Duratechs(same as your engine) with 10K and more OCI, and they are doing very well. Last year I did a used oil analysis(first time in my life)and all was well, with a strong TBN for 10K.

I have the same engine in my 2006 Mazda 6i. I currently am waiting on my 7,800 mile Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 used oil analysis to come back. So, I can't comment on PP yet, but I can tell you from previous results Royal Purple 5w20 would easily get you to 10k and probably closer to 15k. I posted the used oil analysis on this site. It still had a TBN of something like 6.9 at 7200 miles. That was a blackstone report that usually reads lower TBN than other places.
