Thanks for the add. I have a 03 Olds Alero with the 2.2 and I am currently using Rotella T with it using a quart to a quart and a half about every 1,000 miles. Would a 20w50 possibly help ? Engine currently has 219K miles on it.

Maybe a little... don't expect any miracles.

You may have partially plugged drain holes in the oil ring piston grooves. It might be worth a shot to pull the plugs and pour a 50/50 mix of Berryman B-12 and SeaFoam (about 4-6oz) into each plug hole and let sit for 24-48 hours.

It won't hurt - and might actually work a miracle.

If it doesn't.... your engine is just worn.

On mine it seems to be going out the exhaust. And with the recommended viscosity the consumption is even worse.

Also consider.... It still could get cold in Tennessee this time of year. Granted it looks to be rather warm for the next 2 wks according to forecast models. If you get a major cold front and temps drive down into the single digits for low temperatures... A 20w may not be the best in that circumstance.

Try checking/fixing the PCV. Consider trying Maxlife 5w30 or maybe 10w40.

I've tried Barryman B-12 with no results and any time Seafoam is used it won't restart unless a small amount of gasoline is added to the cylinders. Here lately it sounds like it's making a knocking noise on start up. Engine runs great besides consumption and terrible fuel economy.

It doesn't have a serviceable pcv system. And Maxlife had little effect.

Justin,

Simply switching to a different oil will not solve the problem. Common issue with these L61 engines are a clogged PCV orifice, and rings suffering from excessive coking.

Without piston-out disassembly, your best shot is Kreen. Order (1) 1qt. can ($16), and we'll go from there. http://www.kanolabs.com/engCle.html

Can you remove the intake manifold?

I can't remove it because the last time it was at the dealership they did some unauthorized repairs and since I haven't been able to remove it. And I've had the pistons out and there doesn't seem to be any excessive coking. I pulled the head and oil pan to unbolt them from the crankshaft and pulled them from the top.

What did they do? Why can't you remove it? If the built-in PCV orifice isn't flowing as intended, you're going to go through oil quickly.

They rounded some of the bolts off to it and broke one. And the pcv is working. But I've noticed parts for the engine are overpriced or not possible to get in my area.

Why did they remove the intake manifold?
If they rounded/broke bolts, why did you accept/sign-off on the work? Why aren't you taking this up with the dealer, or corporate?

They wasn't supposed to remove it. I took it in under a reflash recall. They never mentioned anything about it , not even in the paperwork. That dealer is no longer in business. it shut down 4 years ago.

If the car is in good enough shape otherwise, I would pick up another engine, re-ring & re-gasket it as cheaply as possible, & swap engines. I did this on 2 beaters years ago when cash was tighter-an '80 LeBaron wagon with a 225 straight six, & a '90 Honda Civic wagon (although I was able to re-ring it in the car, & had a buddy resurface the head & do a valve job on it). If the rest of the car is junk, might be time to send it to U Pull & Pay or the crusher...

I've been starting to think that. And I should probably lay off the redline.
