I know everyone has their favorite brand but what exactly should I be looking for? I have never owned a turbo car and just recently bought a slightly used Chevy HHR SS with a direct injected 2.0L. GM recommends Mobil 5-30 in the manual. I think that is what is in it now. I know GM is pushing change intervals really far. Right now I am at 18% oil life (no idea how many miles). The turbo seems to whine a bit more loudly when the oil is cold (below freezing). It seems to be oil temp related and goes away within a minute of driving. Any opinions?

If this is the same engine as in my Cobalt (and it probably is), anything meeting the 4718M spec should suffice despite the M1 logo stamped on the fill-cap.
Right now, my stash has Castrol Edge, M1 (in both 5w30 and 0w30), PP, Valvoline Synpower and QS' Q-HP and Ultimate Durability flavors.
I haven't noticed any turbo-whine at below-freezing temps, but since the car has summer-tires and is pretty much a garage queen at this time of year, I don't take it out much. Although I did take it out about 3 weeks ago and the DIC was saying it was between 9F and 14F over the course of the drive. Never noticed a problem, though.

The Mobil 1 5W30 is pretty good stuff, I was debating switching to that from my current Amsoil ATM 10W30 in my Mazdaspeed MX5 (1.8 liter BP engine turbocharged.)
I would stick with the Mobil 1 5W30 and just keep an eye on the oil life monitor and change as indicated.

+1 tig1. I happen to use 5w30 PP in my Mazda turbo
Mobil 1 for a turbo. Mobil 1's best quality is handling high temperatures.

Thanks. So I haven't have a ton of time to look through the archives of info, but the general consensus is that the oil life monitor is OK to follow? I was thinking about charging out the filter at 50%, but then I saw a post mentioning that some people use filters twice?!? I guess I will sent out the oil for analysis and go from there.
If this is your first turbo powered car, two things to remember that are very important.
1. Be sure every thing about the engine is warmed up before you push down to hard on the gas pedal.
2. When your through driving, let it set there and idle for a minute or two and let the turbo cool down. One of the biggest mistakes people make is not letting the turbo cool down a little.

May or may not be important if the turbo is water-cooled (like the Subaru turbos).
