I'm pretty sure they mean past the rings and through the PCV system. Sounds like a long shot but I'm sure it's somewhat possible.

At the risk of sounding completely ignorant, I wonder if EGR and this additive would have any effect...

Interesting thought, but I have a hard time imagining how it could be nasty enough that its vapors clean intake system deposits, but not nasty enough to destroy engine oil...

I think that adding a UCL or RL to the fuel might help a little as they usually clean the exchaust tip from carbon soot, so at least that soot would not make its way to the IM through the EGR, but PCV gases would still be a problem.
