My brother has a Dodge Durango, 1st body style(~2000-01 model?), with the 4.7 L V-8 engine. It calls for the evil Fram PH16 or Wix 51085 size oil filter.

I have an old Wix made K-Mart Penske filter in the Fram PH43/Wix 51068 size- same diameter, about 1/2" to 5/8" longer than the specified filter. Will this filter fit without any clearance problems on the 4.7 1st gen Durango?

why worried about the filter size? I have a gen III dakota with a 4.7 and never had a prob with the filter it calls for.

Thanks guys. I have *one* of these filters, bought mucho cheapo when K-Mart phased out their Penske auto supplies. It's a little too long for comfort on my 97 Neon, but so long as it clears should be great for the Durango.

I see no point in running a longer oil filter. There's little to be gained from a couple extra inches of media and a few more ounces of oil. If an engine is using up its filter in one OCI, there's more going on in there than a bigger filter will ever fix.

We just had this same discussion over at www.durangoclub.com

No point????? Read up on VW Passat/A4 1.8T's where VW is spec'ing a bigger filter as a bandaid for those sludge monsters.

If a bigger filter fits, feel free to use it.
Whether you benefit from it or not needs to be studied.

I have no Durango- my brother does. I'm just trying to find a safe way to use one perfectly good filter, bought cheap long ago, that's a bit long for my Neon(it would hang even with or slightly below the oil pan on the Neon).

I'm not looking for extra benefits, just want to know if it will fit with no clearance problems. I'm driving to Austin Thursday, & will just take it along & leave it with him for his next oil change. He drives all highway, & runs oil for much too long, IMO. No, you don't even want to hear how long!

OK, but remember you asked!

He didn't write it down, but I just talked to him & he says at least 25,000 miles, might even be almost 30,000 miles on that oil.

What kind of miracle oil kept his 4.7 L Mopar going through all that? Walmart Supertech Synthetic!

I don't know what weight, but knowing him maybe 20w50. I'll ask him tomorrow. Will also ask him how big the chunks were.

It's now running on an "oil change" I gave him- Havoline 5w40 Synthetic SL and an Advance Auto Parts AA16 Totalgrip filter.
