I just purchased a 1996 Jag XJS convertible with 34k miles. Engine is in excellent condition and it lives in N. Ohio with me. I searched the Forum and found widely differing opinions for oil and filter, and none for cars in Ohio weather (not driven in winter). Would greatly appreciate a rec on oil type/brand options with matching filters for my new baby.

according the the amsoil site it specs anything from 20w to 60w

so if it were me I would probably run some Mobil 1 0w-40 with bosch d+ filter or I might mix it up with a mann or mahle filter depends on how I was feeling... but you could use a Mobil 1 filter to match the oil brand if thats ur thing.

According to XOM and SOPUS, thirty grades are fine for this engine.
Interestingly, Mobil recommends only M1 or MSS 10w30s and AFE, no 5w30s, with Pennzoil recommending only PP or Gold 10w30s, or Ultra Euro 5W-40.
Not sure why neither recommends any 5w30s.
Valvoline recommends only Synpower, with no grade specified.
Remember that the inline six used in this car is a relatively modern design, having nothing in common with either the old V-12 or the ancient twin cam six.
Now, in Cleveland, this car will have a fairly short salt-free season, maybe six months each year.
How much will you drive it over the season?
You could probably get by with a change of either Mobil 1 High Mileage or Mobil 1 Extended Performance 10w30 or Plat 10w30 once each year in the spring.
It really shouldn't be necessary to use any really exotic oil in this engine, nor should it be necessary to change it more often than every 5K.
Incidentally, you should bring this car to Mid-Ohio for the vintage event next weekend.
You could park in the infield with the other Jags, and if you like intersting older cars, you'd really enjoy the event.
The vintage racing is awesome as well.
We'll be there in our old BMW.

Is it the V12, or the AJ16 engine? Either could be in a '96 XJS.

In my '94 V12, I use Mobil 1 10w30. It also sits most of the time, it's got about 74 or 75K since new (been awhile since I looked at it).

If it's the AJ16 inline six engine, just use whatever you want - it won't matter. I put 238K+ on one AJ6 engine and 170K+ on another, using whatever oil I got as a bargain. FWIW, I eventually settled on 10/30 or 15w40, whatever was handy.

I use OEM Jaguar filters on my V12. IIRC, EBC 9658 is the part number. The AJ16 uses the same filter.

FWIW, I use Pennzoil Conventional in the AJ-V8 in our Xj8. It only gets driven 2-3K a year.

According to Me, use Pennzoil 5w30 conventional and be happy.

Thanks for the guidance. Like an idiot, I just now checked the posting board and got your message ... would have enjoyed the Mid-Ohio vintage car event last week.

+1 on the T5

If you want to run non HDEO in it, Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 10W30 would do it well.

For filter, Purolator would be a decent choice.

It will happen again in 2013, probably over the weekend in which the last Sunday in June falls.
The weather was perfect, sunny and not too hot.
There was an older fellow there with a TC he had bought rotted into the ground in Indiana in 2005.
He rebuilt the car mechanically and built a period style custom body for it.
It was very pretty, complete with high fishtail exhaust.
There was also a gorgeous yellow E-type convertible, and a very nice Jag Mk X saloon, a car you don't often see.
Lots of other interesting cars as well.
The racing was entertaining as well, although some of the iron run is recent enough to stretch the term "vintage"
Enjoy the XJS this summer!
