Michigan born but my heart belongs in dixie
I have a ford escort with the bullet proof 1.9 litre. It currently has 193,867.3 miles on it. I am the second ower of this vehicle. It only had 76,500 miles on the clock when I bought it. To say the least it has benn a wonderful car. Great milage no oil leaks or usage. The question is the last hundred thousand miles it been a beat around car. My grandama to my ex to many of my friends have been the primary drives of this vehicle. The only reason I still have it is for that reason. I am the nice guy that has the extra vehicle that is less this beaty but runs great. So if someone needed a vehicle that I know it a copy of the lisence and a call to their insurence to check it out and it gas and go. The problem with that is doing normal maintence on time or milage. The last hundred thousand has been oil changes of nothing shorter than 13,000 miles but not past 17,500 miles. still with 193,000 miles on it never been opened up it is lucky to use a quart at or past 10,000 miles. My problem is my boyfriend is driving it now and just told me the milage on it today. 193,000 miles. I check the stick and my recorded and the manual in the glove box and all three say the last oil servive was done at 167,000 miles. When that was changed Pennzoil LL 15w40 was used with a mc fl-400 filter. at that mile of oil drain it has only used 1.75 quarts of oil. I plan on dropping it wednesday. I was wondering if any of you guys would be interested in seeing an uoa on a 26,000 mile oil drain with a 1.9 litre ford ohc with 4.5 quarts of Pennzoil Long Life 15w40 and a mc oil filter with just 1.75 quarts of mc 5W-20 as make-up oil?

UOA! I dont think there is much point to a TBN. If you have any its from the add oil.
Hmmmm... I wonder if you could get a TAN instead of a TBN. TAN might be interesting.

LOL! It's a Mazda bottom end of the engine. Same legendary B6 block durability/reliability, different head.

BTW: this engine should go with 10W30 and not 15W50.

Sure...if you don't mind spending the money just to entertain us.

But you're probably better off spending the money on any maintenance that is due on that vehicle...fluids, filters, belts, hoses, plugs, tires, etc.

You're lucky! The 1995 Escort that I maintain leaks oil from every hole and has had three radiators in 150,000 miles. The transmission is starting to go south now so the car will likely be retired within the year.

If you haven't had any routine maintenance done then how is the timing belt and water pump holding out?

I simply can't comprehend a vehicle not even getting the oil changed in years of driving. Much less tire replacement or even checking the air in them.

Spend your money on maintenance and forego the oil analysis.

I have never head that. I thought the 1.9L traced it's origins back to the 1.6L CVH engine used in the very first Escorts.

There is a 1.8L engine used at one time in the Escort which is a Mazda engine, but, it's not very commonly found in the Escort.

I think Brian is right. I had a 95 Escort GT and it's 1.8L engine was a Mazda engine, but I am pretty sure the 1.9L engine is a Ford unit.

I think Brian and Patman are right.

Most of my knowledge of this generation of Escorts comes from the point of view of "which parts will fit my 1994 Mazda MX-3 GS?". I have followed some Escort and Ford Probe boards in this pursuit, so its not like I have a lot of experience. However I am pretty sure the 1.9L engine found in most non-GT third Gen Escorts is the dreaded CVH, an engine said to be noisy and sludge producing. The Escort GT had a Mazda BP 1.8L engine as found in some Proteges. Developments of this engine were found in the Miata, and its predecessor the B6 was in the 4 cylinder version of the Mazda MX-3 in 1.6L form.

The transplant of a 1.8L BP into a 4 cyl B6 engined MX-3 is a fairly common mod in the Mazda community, although not as common as dropping a larger K series V6 from a Ford Probe into my MX-3 GS with the tiny 1.8L K8 V6.

A friend of mine had two Escort GTs in a row and loved them as a reliable, decent handling little car, but yeah people I have known have massively preferred the MAzda engined versions.

Bet that oil's thickened back up and is grody as all get-out. But hey, that car's lasted a long time, probably with not too many friendly driver's either.

Personally, I agree, unless you have $20+ postage just lying around, spend the money on a coolant flush, new belts/hoses, spark plugs to keep her going even further.

Although 193k+ is a lot, that car could still go a LOT further if you want it to with proper maintenance.

I have 165k on my 10yr old truck, and it BETTER go past the 200k+ mark.

Had a Chevy 350 p/up that went 300k+ miles before we sold it; still had plenty of engine life left, the suspension was shot and the camper was really weighing it down.

In Michigan winters, if you need a 40wt, use a 5w-40 or 10w-40; 15w40 is a bit too thick for the top-end in cold temps.

I used 15w40 in a 4-cylinder Toyota p/up w/270K miles - in the summer/fall at 6k intervals; for winter we used 10w30 at 3-4k intervals.
