15w40 Oil Comparision?

In my 2002 Ford F350 Power Stroke 7.3 diesel I am using the MC15w40 without any complaints. The problem is, the MC is hard to find in the gallon jugs which makes the 15 quart oil change easier. I know many like the Rotella 15w40, Delo 15w40 and Delvac 15w40. In case I had to pick one of the last three for future oil change choices, which oil should I go with? Opinions from Power Stroke owners welcome. I recently read on the Shell Rotella website International(who made my 7.3) recommends Rotella 15w40.

Also, I find it highly unlikely that International specifically recomends the use of Shell Rotella. Mostly because of a bulletin they put out that basically says that if you must uses Rotella, you need to add the defoaming additive for it to perform properly in a PSD. In fact, chevron Delo400 is part of Internationals stock supply that you find on dealers shelves. For a IH dealer to stock Rotella or even Mobil Delvac, the dealer has to source it from a local oil supplier. Just remember, if you go to the Rotella forums, it should be obvious the bias slant you will recieve.

Ruby- As far as Shell saying International recommends THEIR oil -- This is from International's site-

"As far as recommendations for specific brands of engine oil, we at International have a policy to not express our opinions about products that we do not ourselves sell. Instead we just state that owners should change at the recommended intervals listed in their owner's manual using a good quality engine oil made to the API standards for diesel engines: API classification CH-4/SJ."

I have read that the foaming problem with the PSD 7.3, has been addressed by Shell, in the reformuation and the constant upgrades that they and all companies make to their products. Shell Rotella T is a good oil and easy to find. Use the search, function here on Bitog and on Shells Rotella site. You will find your answers there.

You've also started five other threads asking which oil is the best for a PSD. Try the search feature on which oil you want input on. You will probably find all the info. you want and then some.

Thanks very much for the feedback. I will re-visit the rotella website. I guess the situation is there are so many opinions about several of the popular 15w40 oils. I'm just trying to narrow my choice(s).

Close your eyes and use Delo 400 or Delvac Super,either way you won't go wrong.Both are the most cost effective lubrication solution for diesels and gassers alike.

In your Power Stroke there is not one dino API approved CH/CI/CI+ oil on the market that will not work for 3K severe or 5K normal oil changes in your PSD. Pick one on price, color of the jug, or any other criteria you deem appropriate.

In my 95 PSD I have used Shell Rotella T, Delvac 1300S, Delo 400, Schaeffers, Amsoil, Royal Purple and also a 50/50 mix of Delvac 1300S and Delvac I. I have used oil analysis on all the above except the Shell and my mix of Delvac. You know what, they all worked great with great used oil analysis.

In my 01 PSD I have used Shell Rotella T, Schaeffers, Royal Purple and a 50/50 mix of Delvac 1300S and Delvac I (Mobil I Truck/Suv). I am presently using Schaeffers 15W40. Again, they all worked great with outstanding used oil analysis.


So my advice is to pick one and sleep easier. As mentioned above, Delo 400, Delvac 1300S or Shell Rotella T are all great dinos. Castrol has a 15W40 that I will try next. The specs looked good. I will do a VOA. But we are looking at the end of the year for this.

So in summary, if the jug says CI+ and you like the price and the oil has good availability, go for it. You absolutely will not go wrong.

Thanks for the feedback concerning the various oil choices in your Power Strokes. I've seen the Castrol 15w40 in a few parts stores. I've used Castrol 10w30 in some of my gassers in the past, it seemed to be a great oil, so my thought is the 15w40 must be also.

Uh, last time I checked, my 2001 F250 had a 7.3 powerstroke.

Guess we don't qualify as Powerstroke owners even though we've answered his question several times

And now 59 Vetteman has stepped in it recommending oil based on jug color

I advised Ruby several threads back to buy the prettiest jug and that wasn't acceptable to him or her whichever

Ruby- Why dontcha buy every oil you can find and mix them all together and use that? Problem solved

Reading this b/c I bought a bunch of Tection. My question is this (and maybe it's another thread), how does tection have the lowest visc at 40c yet it also has the warmest pour point? Shouldn't these things be sorta dependent upon each other? I guess not but how is that?

Hey Ruby..your running into a lot of testosterone LOL...we really love you and it's good to hear from you once in awhile..even if it's the same question..enjoy the truck..change the oil every 3k..you'll be ok..........oh ya..I would stick with the MC 15-40...................but what do I know..I drive a gasser..
