Which 15w40 diesel oil?

Look at the VOA thread (Virgin oil analysis). Delo has tons of anti-wear additives (moly, phosphorus, zinc) and detergents (calcium, magnesium). Compare Delo's numbers with other deisel oils (synth or dino) and you will see how good it is. For less than $2/qhart, its my choice.

Hammer,

Thanks for the added information. I plan on using a good dino oil such as the Delo.

Thanks for the information, the Delo is looking better and better. At WM they have the gallon jug for $7 dollars and change. With the MC oil filter (FL1995) that only comes to about $42.00 for the oil/oil filter change.

Ruby:

If you have a Costco in your area (probably not given your location), you can get Delo cheaper than $7.00 per gallon. Or at least you used to be able to.

We do have Costco's in my area. The Costco near my home carries the Rotella T 15w40, prior to that it was the Delvac 15w40. I'm not sure about other Costco's in my area, maybe one of them may carry the Delo. When I get a chance I will check them out.

The info on the Shell Rotella is correct. In late 1994 when the PSD came out, Shell did not have enough anti-foam in their oil. I have a 95 PSD and at 2300-2600 miles, you knew it was time to change. ( First 34K on Rotella 15W40) This problem was cured by Shell many years ago and does not apply anymore. It is a good oil for a diesel.

You want a top oil IMO, 50/50 Delvac 1300S and Mobil 1 Truck/SUV. Or Schaeffers 15W40 or 5W40. My 95 has the Mobil brew and my 01 has Schaeffers 15W40. I will eventually change all to the Schaeffers 5W40 when my small stash is gone.

Interesting. Costco in my area carries mostly Chevron with some Mobil 1 5W-30 and 10W-30 thrown in. At one time they offered Mobil 1 T&SUV, but that didn't last long. In fact, the T&SUV lasted such a short time there that I'm beginning to think I dreamt that it was there.

It's all about what the traffic will bear, I guess, maybe based on how much the local market is saturated with different products offered by different vendors. Dunno. Costco's offereings certainly seem to differ from one area in the country to another.

I have consistently run Chevron Supreme 5W-30 in my Outbacks for quite awhile because it is a fine oil and I can get it for about $1.12/qt. at Costco. Most other auto stores in town don't stock it much.

Boaz,

Thanks for the up-date regarding the AAco Costco's. I guess in our region, the Rotella T is only diesel oil Costco chooses to carry. I guess they may base their desion on popularity and of course price? I did see a lady with a case of Rotella T 15w40 attempting to place the case of Rotella T in her SUV at a Costco. Well, I asked her if I could help her load it in her vehicle. She was more than glad to except. I did ask her if her husband/boyfriend used this oil in a diesel vehicle. She said her husband has a 2001 Power Stroke and uses the Rotella T with no complaints. The reason I asked her this was because I've heard Power Stroke owners had issues with the Rotella T foaming at one time, but I now hear this problem has been resolved.

Your right, you would figure all Costco's would carry the same oil? Interesting.I remember seeing the Chevron supreme 5w30/10w30 at WM fot $1.14 per quart at one time. I also read somewhere this oil is one of the better oils out there.

You sent a response to my question recently (look up a few threads-there you go) now you remember? If you don't know the answer to my again asked question, just say so. If I wanted the answer "buy the one with the prettiest jug" I would not have asked the question to begin with. Hopefully, you must realize some oils perform better than others, it's not the design of the container but the oil inside the container I care about.

Ruby"

I'll say it once again I did NOT send you an email, I replied to you on this forum.

So once again you have gotten essentially the same replies you got the first two times you asked this question.

You are correct I don't know the answer to your question, NOBODY does, that is the whole point.
There is no BEST oil. There is no BEST beer, there is no BEST gasoline, etc. etc etc.

Ask the question again in a month or so and see if your replies differ or if you get the same opinions, some like Rotella T, some like Delo etc....no clear winner, all the major brands are good.
