14.5 BS oil seal question

14.5 BS vertical shaft, bottom oil seal leak is getting worse on my '95 Craftsman mower. Is the seal replaceable externally? Like doing it in frame from the outside or is it a split the case job? TIA for those in the know.

The seal installs from the outside of the pan but the odds are that the engine will have to come off the frame. Taking the engine off will also allow you to see if it is the seal that is actually leaking because these engines have a habit of developing a leak in the pan gasket under the cylinder.

AFAIK you'll need to remove the engine. You can put some grease inside the seal lip on the new seal to help future leaks. Will give you an excellent opportunity to go over the engine while it's out of course.
