A bit of a concern here folks. I bought PP after reading the forums daily for the last month. I got home today after my 20 minute highway commute, and noticed a noticeable "tick" at idle. I popped the hood and it was definitely present. I'm a rather disappointed to say the least and at the same time angry and frustrated!

Here's the low down-

Vehicle:
-2011 Altima (under 2,000km's) 2.5L 4 cylinder DOHC
-FF flushed at 1,000 miles (1600km's) and replaced with PP 5W30
-WIX 51356 filter
-Oil levels are perfect

Nissans tick.. The Nissans I have owned all tick at idle and I've chalked it upto the injectors.

Pennz Plat should really not cause a problem.

Our 2010 Altima with the 3.5L V6 had a tick at idle when it was running the factory fill. After the factory fill was drained and replaced with Valvoline SynPower 5w-30, the ticking has gone away and has not returned at all with my 2500-3000 mile oil change intervals.

Probably nothing oil related. If it ticks on almost brand-new PP 5w-30 it's probably going to tick on just about any 5w-30.

Man let me tell you I have METICULOUSLY cared for my Altima 2.5S and she ticks, I don't care what oil you use, conventional or syn., expensive or cheap, she ticks. She'll tick when warm and tick when cold, you'll hear the tick when you are 90 years old. Don't worry about the tick, it's her way of speakin' so drive her nice and stop yer tweakin'.

That was really weird, totally not planned.

Ya got a nice rhythm there. Can anyone back that up with drums and a guitar............

The QR25 ticks. Always has probably always will. It's been around long enough the issues of old (pre-cat, butterflies) have been rectified. I wouldn't worry about it...

Thanks guys! What's up Chris! The little tick is the fuel injectors as SLCraig said. I would not worry unless it sounds really loud, it should almost be where you have to listen for it with the car idling and no radio or AC. It is well known and I am surprised Nissan hasn't worked it out.

Question:was it ticking 5 minutes before he put in the PP?? If not guess what????

Remember, there's more than one variable in this equation. a) Factory fill out, Pennzoil Platinum in. b) Factory filter off, WIX 51356 on. Could it be caused or exaggerated by the filter?

You did not notice anything before the PP and the Wix filter? So if you want peace of mind do as i did after finding problems with Edge, change back the filter and switch to whatever the stealer says they use for ff. I switched back to PP which was in the car before and guess what??? 6 seconds later after I started the car problem gone!!!The ole cause and affect rule.

I am still breaking this motor in properly, never abused, never driven cold, no consistent speeds, always below 3,000 rpm`s.

I can`t say if it`s injectors or not, I guess I cant comment intelligently on that front. If I listen for it, I can actually here it inside the car.

Almost every nissan altima with the 2.5 ticks. Mine did, my sons does, I've listened to others' and theirs do too. Nothing to worry about. Drive it to 300,000 miles with the tick and enjoy it.....

Not that this will help the ticking but, get on that engine a little bit!

No matter of what oil you use, I have a sentra with a maxima 3.5 in it and it ticks until the engine is up to operating temperature the tensioner has a little bit of slack and it will tick and rattle, however if it doesn't subside after fully warming up get it checked out. I doubt you have any problems its just annoying. Do you have the qr25 or the vq35? Both do it, each have their individual valvetrains so it varies. Run mobil 1 0w40 you will notice a difference in the valve tick. In the spring run m1 10w40.

Are you sure it is an oil/mechanical tick and not a fuel injector tick? My 91 BMW has a tick that is temperature dependent. I thought it was oil related, thought it was fuel injector related. Even swapped injectors, new ones did the same. At temperature, the fuel injectors tick loudly and are easily/clearly heard.
