Amazon and Walmart both list 10 40 on their websites, as well as all the boutiques - its still there if you look for it. I betting any pep boys auto zone etc would have it too.

The regular flavor of Mobil 1 5w30 also says "meets or exceeds the requirements" of API SN on the Mobil 1 website, so both oils are the same in terms of warranty.

That's true, one of several reasons why "plain vanilla" M1 5W30 is not in the sump. The specs are so good on the ESP 5W30, however, that I'm tempted.

That was understandable, until you got to the second mention of 0W-20. Did you intend to say you switched to 5W-20 (from 0W-20?), consistent with the previous sentence?

I've switched from 0w-20 to 5W-20, partly for that reason, contrary to what Toyota says in the owner's manual. Is that a mistake?

You are correct, I can still find it with no problem but the selection is less and less as each day passes. Home Depot (at least in my area) just discontinued the 5 quart jug of shell formula 10w-40.

How is a 5W30 able to handle the viscosity spread with little or no VII?

With a better quality base oil. Those that were around in the heyday of GC 0w30 might remember the breakdown test that Terry Dyson had done on it and found out that it had no viscosity index improvers in it at all. So if a 0w30 can be made without VII, surely a 5w30 (that isn't group 3) can as well.

Good to go know. I didn't think that (no vii) was possible with multigrade either!

Does new GC (made in Belgium?) have no vii either? is it group iv or v?

I'm really not sure but I doubt it, the new GC is a mystery but I don't think it's as good of a formula as the original green GC was. It's kind of fallen off the radar on this site.

Probably because they are getting old and started dying. Why make oil for cars no longer on the road?

My 99 Firebird with the 3.8 called for 10w30 unless driven in cold temps. I think it was the early 2000s when 10w30 was no longer the recommendation for the 3.8 or any other engines for that matter.

Yeah, I mean 5w20, sorry for the typo.

All Honda S2000(1999/2009) came with 10/30, I run Mobil 1 0/40 in ours. I have found that the 0/40 is right at the lower cut-off for a 40w at the end of 7500 miles. I like this oil because it does not thicken up as the miles go up in our S2000.

I never had any trouble finding Castrol or Mobil 10W30 at my CT. If anything it is Pennzoil that seems to have little interest in selling this particular grade.

I was in Toronto a couple weeks ago and was surprised to see so many brands selling 10w30 at Walmart.

I have seen some of those two here, on occasion, particularly the M1. Shell has so many products on the shelf they either have to give up grades for sale or product lines. Some of this may also depend on the province.

CT has a decent amount of 10w30 in different formulations.

All the 'regular oils' - GTX, PZ YB, Mobil, and Formula 1 can all be had in 10w30.

For synthetics, it gets a bit thinner, but there is Formula 1 syn 10w30; M1 and M1 EP 10w30, and Edge 10w30.

Plus a decent amount of HDEO 10w30's.

I am fond of 10w30 from my John Deere Zero Turn mower, my Yamaha portable generator, to my wife's Cadillac CTS, to my Chevy 2500 6.0L gasser, on up thru my Detroit Diesel 12.7L Series 60. Nary a complaint from any of them. The mower does 2.25 acres of lawn every time it gets used. The Yamaha will typically operate at 10 hr stretches. Cadillac CTS is a 2006 and still runs great. The Detroit is a 2000 motor that had a factory reman and now has 868,000 miles on the reman. Doesn't use any more oil than the day it was dropped in my semi truck. I am sold on 10w30 across the board. I would have no issue using a 5w30 if I had to, but I wouldn't use a 0w30 in anything.
