very limited selection of 10Wx30's in different stores summer or winter but 5Wx30's everywhere!

checking Mobil 1 Extended Performance data (Mobil website), there is not much difference between 5Wx30 and 10W30, for example:
KV100 of 5Wx30 (10.6) is higher by 0.4
VI of 5Wx30 is obviously better 169 vs.149
HTHS very close 3.0 vs. 3.1
Noack I'm guessing not much difference between the 2.

also it sounds like more $ is spent on 5Wx30's for testing, certification, etc. i'm guessing since i see 5Wx30's in general have many more listed "passing or exceeding" standards listed on the jug including d1g2 compare to 10wx30's ...

as much as I like 10Wx30, if this trend continues (less demand?) RIP 10Wx30

10w30 are probably from cars 95 or earlier? My 97 ask for 5w30.

Probably because they are getting old and started dying. Why make oil for cars no longer on the road?

Well yeah 10w30s are not a typical oil recommendation anymore. Places you find them.... Some off brand stores... Or "off" brands. Which are fine or even very good by the way. Warren Oil had a 10w30 that PQIA tested really good in NOACK results at 7.6. The other 10w30s tested around that same time we're all above 12%. 10w30s will still be out there. Just in places other than Walmart.

Just picked up a jug of Mobil 1 10W30 at Walmart on clearance, for my two mowers. Was disappointed to see it doesn't appear as 'stout' as Mobil 1's 5W30 (by small margins), although plenty good for the mowers. Is there any advantage at all of a 10W30 over a 5W30?

Mobil 1 10w30 HM would be a better choice (or better Mobil 1 10w-40 HM) for your mowers. No difference in price.

Mobil 1 10w30 HM
V@100 = 12.1
HTHS = 3.5
API SN
ACEA A3/B3

Less VIs, leaving more lube per volume of oil.

I believe there are quite a few 5w30 synthetics out there that use little or even no VIIs at all.

How is a 5W30 able to handle the viscosity spread with little or no VII?

With a better quality base oil. Those that were around in the heyday of GC 0w30 might remember the breakdown test that Terry Dyson had done on it and found out that it had no viscosity index improvers in it at all. So if a 0w30 can be made without VII, surely a 5w30 (that isn't group 3) can as well.

GC 0W30 was legendary and, being made in Germany, was a "true" synthetic and recommended by BMW for my 530i. I think that the Mobil 1 ESP 5W30 that you selected for your 'Vette might be the closest thing domestically available.

I'm hoping it's similar to GC 0w30, it certainly has some impressive specs! I just wish more people were using it, I'm afraid it might disappear off the shelves if it doesn't sell well here. (it does seem to be easier to find in Canada than it is in the US)

As referenced by OilUzer, the KV100, HTHS, and VI numbers (from Mobil 1's website). Thought the KV100 and HTHS would have been slightly higher with the 10W30, vs 5W30. Not that it would make any difference to an engine, but this is BITOG

Very impressive specs indeed. Would like to try it but the price ($11/liter) has me hesitating. Also, the fact that it "meets or exceeds the requirements" of API SN but is not actually certified for that application might be problematic in an engine warranty claim. I'm not a gambler. (LOL)

Mainly lower Noack compare to 5w30 (same for 5w20 having lower Noack than 0w20). I switched to 10w30 and 0w20 to reduce intake deposit on my DI car, anything that helps is welcome.

The regular flavor of Mobil 1 5w30 also says "meets or exceeds the requirements" of API SN on the Mobil 1 website, so both oils are the same in terms of warranty.
