10W-40

I wonder what would be the ideal Car for a 10W-40.

I am reminded of my parent's 1982 Olds Delta 88 Royale, with the 307. That thing was a Tank.. i swear, if you shot it, it would keep going.

THAT car, in the 80s and 90s, used Texaco Havoline Supreme 10W-40 year Round.. in Upstate NY. Unless 10w30 was used unbeknownst to me.. btu it went OVER 350,000 miles, and i wonder if the 10W-40 was what kept it going?

3000 mile OCI -Religiously.-

Sooo, my Olds is a 1991 4-cyl, waay different, Fuel Injected and the like.. it says 5w30 on the Filler Cap so now that ive found a good Oil for it (Valvoline maxLife Full Synthetic 5w30, should be fien in there until end of time,) I wonder about the Other Olds relationship with 10W-40, and other cars..

I do. It's what I run in the summer. If you get something like Redline, with a pour point of -54f, run it all year. It's also the old high moly Redline.

Wow! That sounds like a 0W-40 with lots of Moly.. Good Stuff! I seemed to have decided Valvoline MaxLofe Full Synthetic 5w30 as it has good Moly, and i can get even more Moly from Napa if i want, not necessary for my car...

Sounds like the LubroMoly stuff! But thanks for the Info!!

It also seems i dont need to worry about the "40" film for my car, as the cap says "%w-30" and as long as i keep it in good health, i can run that for the rest of my life... in my Olds..

Engines last a long time if maintained properly. I had a friend whose parents had a 1968 Buick 225 that made it to 350,000 miles before getting rid of it . The car was well maintained .

I run 10/40 syn when i can get it on sale, currently im running Valvoline syn 5w40 in a 2005 Hyundia Elantra.

My mom's (before I bought it from her) 83 Cutlass 2 dr had the 307-4V. Great little engine-ran Castrol 10-40 year round with Fram orange cans exclusively. Engine never burned a quart of oil for its entire existence----256K and the only reason I let it go, was everything besides the engine was either broken or gonna break real soon.
I tried to get my Dad to order ANYTHING but the 2.14 axle it came with--but noooooooooooo

Your 83 was probably identical to the 82 my parents had. grey, right? Brougham? yea...

That car was DRIVE IN TO A TREE .. needed only Grille and Hood replaced. Trans rebuild ONE TIME. Maaaan, thats why i love my Olds now...

I ran 10w-40 Castrol GTX in my 86 Monte Carlo SS in the summer all that time with a good Wix filter.

In my 1970 Nova with a 327 in it I ran the same or if we had a really got summer I ran Valvoline VR1 20w50.

My brother has been using Mobil 1 5W-40 in his oil burner 2.slow Beetle. He burned through 2 quarts in 9,000 miles. He bought Maxlife 10W-40 for his next run. We will see if it will slow down the consumption. If it doesn't, we are going to try Castrol High Mileage 10W-40. It has the highest viscosity @ 100 C which is 16.1.

JT1 you are correct. Its basically a vintage oil grade for the most part just like 20w-50 which is why most of the oils I see on clearance are usually those two.

My 1981 Honda Accord saw nothing but Pennzoil 10w40 and ran fine when i sold it at 160,000 miles.

My next car was a 1989 VW Jetta, which called for 20w50. I ran 20w50 year-round here in Texas without any problems for over 200,000 miles.

Right.
You can often find 10W-40 on clearance.
I have used it in warm weather in all of our cars.
Subaru even allows the use of 10W-40 down to -4F, although I'd probably not use it in that kind of cold.
In our old Civics, I always used 10W-40 or something even thicker.
The engines lasted a long time, and cold weather starting was never a problem.
10W-40 may be an obsolete grade, but I would have no problem using it in most engines in warm weather.
Incidentally, IIRC, GM specifically recommended that 10W-40 not be used in that old Olds. I think this goes back a ways, to an era when the 10W-40s of the time caused some serious damage in various GM engines.

I will use it when an engine that requires 5w30 gets leaks or has very high mileage. Here are examples-
1) My Autoshop student's Accord w/225K on the clock and a few small oil leaks
2) 10w-40 high mileage in my mother-in-laws subaru w/140k and several oil leaks (the bad leaks have now been repaired)
3) My 1999 w/only 63K but many very small oil leaks.
4) My old Ford Escort that had minor leaks @160K.

Anyway, I think the last time I saw vehicles call for 10w40 was when I worked on a few 1980s Nissan cars and trucks. it said to use 10w40 if temperatures never fell below freezing. That in mind, it seems 1980s Nissan engines always did fine, even if 10w30 was always used.

1980s Nissan engines are some of the best made, IMHO.

I am going to own another 1989 Nissan 240SX KA24E (the SOHC was better).. This engine is great in this car, almost perfect, actually. (Not the fastest, but plenty sporty. And still kinda fast.)

I too have put 10W-40 in a Honda CRX and was like "[censored]? it feels Slower"....

had a 1986 Jetta "Deluxe." First car. i love this car.

I put 10W-40 in this car. german cars like it.
