Threw in 3 quarts of 10w-40 Valvoline conventional, and a quart of 10w30 quaker state synthetic into my corolla this morning. I think that makes a 10w-37.5? Anyways...

Pouring in: The 10w-40 was noticably thicker than the one bottle of 10w30 I put in, and took longer to pour in.

Starting the car up: Took the same effort to start up, 3 cranks, no drama, no lack of oil flow.

Hood open: Sounds just as quiet, maybe a little quieter than the 10w30.

Sitting down: Idle was the same as always.

Driving: Engine was just as eager as always to rev, driving felt the same. Only difference I spotted was when I was making a turn from a stop, if I gave it a little gas my tires would lose traction for a moment, didnt happen this time. Also my engine would make a harmonic at a certain RPM, does not do it anymore.

Starting it up cold later on: Started up very smoothly and drove fine.

Overall: Made my engine feel like when I ran castrol high mileage 10w30. Im sure they were close to being just as thick too. I bought the Valvoline on sale at kmart, gave a quart to a friend so I had to make up for the missing with the quaker state. I'll post back again next week to see if my MPG decreased at all, and see if I burned any (usually burn a quart every 1k).

I originally bought the Valvoline to see if it would decrease my consumption, being a thicker weight. Shouldnt have given that last quart away, but I doubt it matter much. Was going to fill with regular 10w30 havoline today, but decided if I didnt use it now I probally wasnt going to use it. I posted this for the #@$%! of it, and because im sure some people are curious what a thicker weight will do to their engine.

When I had my 3000GT,I ran 10W30 in it until I changed the oil for the first time (that`s what was in the car when I bought it). During the cold of the winter, the 10W30 seemed VERY thin on startup in that car. Cold winter morning first-startups were very loud, with a harsh metal-to-metal sound. When I switched it to 10W40 (definitely thicker upon pouring it in,just like you observed,my startups were whisper quiet! Engine sounded and felt way more lubed with the thicker oil.

The FSM for that car recommended thicker oil. It stated fuel economy might decrease, but it would protect the engine better. It also recommended thicker oils (10W40,15W40,20W40,20W50)if you did alot of extended high speed driving.

Whatever you do, don't buy the new Havoline 10w30 for your Toyota, it extremely thin; they should've labelled it HM 5W-20.

There is nothing wrong with what you did; Valvoline conventional 10W-40 is on the thin side of a 40 weight anyway.

Valvoline has always been my choice when using conventional oils. Best conventional I`ve ever used.
