10w-30 is no good for my engine

Soupy, I didn't get a separate engine manual from John Deere, but I did find the Kawasaki spec's for oil.
32F - 95F > SAE30
32F - 115F > SAE40
-4F - 95F > 10w30
I'm trying the 10w30 now but will probably goto SAE30 if I see any oil usage.

Soupy, oops the SAE40 is from 68F - 115F. BTW, is there any difference between a "HD30" (Heavy Duty 30) wt on like from Castrol or Pennzoil vs an oil say from Havoline SAE30 which doesn't advertise as being Heavy Duty oil?

I'm no oil expert but I like to run HD oils because these mowers breath a lot of dirt. I believe HD oils have more cleaning additives but maybe some of the forum oil guru's can give you a better explanation to what to use and why.

I use this https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/acd.aspx Remember I run all Kohler's now except for the smaller motors on push mowers, aerators etc. I still use this oil in them too.

Soupy, I believe there's a difference between a straight grade of oil that's called "Heavy Duty" on the bottle ... and a HDEO which is the dual gas/diesel rated oil.

I think some straight grades are merely marketed as "heavy duty."

frequency, Can you confirm this about the ones you are looking at? The true HDEO will have the gas and diesel ratings on the bottle.

Bror Jace I have a bottle of the Castrol HD 30 wt and its not rated for commercial because it only has the API SL in the starburst. It does say "Heavy Duty" on the bottle and thats why I was wondering if it was a heavier 30 wt at the higher temperatures than the other oil manufacturers? I guess its just marketing.

I think that the main reason that "HD" is put on some SAE 30 oil bottles is to differentiate from the SAE 30 ND (non-detergent) oil that is much more suited for air compressor oil use.

frequency, that's why I asked.

I thought about Castrol ... and whether that "heavy duty" oil was a HDEO ... heavy duty engine oil ... otherwise known as a 'fleet' or dual-rated oil for both gas and diesel engines.
